Nicole Kidman A Terrible Actress? Say It Ain’t So, The Times!
Baz Luhrmann’s Latest Epic TM Australia has finally premiered, and the reviews are trickling in!
Claire Sutherland from the Herald Sun loved it, calling it “a love letter to the Australian landscape and our history” and adding that “Australia has international blockbuster written all over it.” Meanwhile, over at The Age, Jim Schembri was somewhat less impressed, calling the film good but excessively lengthy and full of “Aussie cliches”. Both reviewers seemed happy enough with the performance of leading lady Nicole Kidman though.
But a reviewer for The Times over in the UK has positively slammed Our Nic!
Baz Luhrmann’s choice of Nicole Kidman to star in his latest epic movie Australia has been savaged by a British newspaper columnist.
Melanie Reid, writing in Rupert Murdoch’s Times newspaper, describes as a “big, big mistake” Luhrmann’s decision to select Kidman for the role of Lady Sarah Ashley, who inherits a remote cattle station shortly before World War II.
Reid says Kidman is an immediate turn-off for female cinemagoers who feel she is “one of the most overrated actors” in the world and who has “been the kiss of death in practically every movie she has starred in”.
Oooh! Saucer of milk, table two!
I know what you’re thinking – surely Melanie Reid is done slagging off an Australian national treasure, yeah? If only, dear reader. If only.
“Kidman is exquisitely accomplished at being awful,” Reid writes. “She can’t act.Instead she drifts around films like a lost porcelain doll, looking frozen, brittle and vapid, staring at the camera with her oh-golly-look-how-I’m-looking-interesting blue eyes. Australia the country deserves redder blood than this.”
You know, I cannot wait to go and see this movie and judge for myself. I will be harsh, but fair – like when I saw Atonement and started the Facebook hate group immediately afterwards.

I think she is fairly accurate.
I love love loved French and Saunders piss take of Cold Mountain with the Kidman character doing just that, hopefully they’ll get to have a go at STRAYA too.
I disagree that Nicole Kidman is a bad actress, but I do think she’s lost her spot on the A-List, and she has to admit that she isn’t able to draw in the crowds anymore, assuming she ever did.
Having said that, I think ‘Australia’ would’ve been better served with someone like Naomi Watts or Miranda Otto.
I don’t think Nicole Kidman is a good actress either, and I’m allowed to say that because I’m an aussie! She is always very wooden and her face is always severe, she just plain overacts. Good Australian actresses are Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette (even though I don’t particulary like her) and Rachel Griffiths. Nicole Kidman only got to where she is today because she married Tom Cruise.
She can’t act – spot on. And from what I’ve seen of the trailers she’s got even worse. They should have gone for Cate Blanchett. Or even just an English actress – it’s not meant to be an Australian so the part didn’t really have to be a local. Just anyone but Kidman. Any person who can’t even own up to getting surgery done when it’s blatantly obvious really shouldn’t be given any work.
Oh dear, this is what I had feared. I have long doubted the talent of ‘our Nic’.I really hoped that Australia was going to be a turn up for the books for her. It seems I may be bitterly disappointed. It is good to hear I am not alone in thinking she is overrated, I have never understood her appeal. I thought everyone loved her and that I was the weird one. I kept looking for things to like about her, forcing myself to think of positive things about her. If I had known the whole world felt this way, I would have spoken up earlier. Aussies like to bag our own, but hate it when foreigners do. Get over it I say, don’t be so jingoistic, it’s not a good look.
Kidman struggles with accents, thinks emoting is a gaping mouth and just plain annoys me. I agree she is an awful actress and ruins every movie she is in. Time to retire old girl before your face cracks.
