Nice Work, The Age!

Wow! Some top stuff from The Age’s front page yesterday. The following heinous use of an apostrophe was noted by my clever clogs chum Fluffy, who uploaded this image to the awesome Facebook group Apostrophes Make Things Possessive, Not Plural.

Slow hand claps all round…

(And now that I’ve done this, you’ll suddenly begin noticing – if you haven’t already – my evil molesting of grammar and inappropriate use of punctuation, and feel totally stabby whenever I make a really obvious mistake. But I’m not a real journalist! I’m just a small town girl, living in a lonely world!)

UPDATE: It’s not the “Hero’s” bit we’re worried about, kittens – it’s the “event’s” bit in the small print at the bottom.

but … but … the expression ‘hero’s welcome’ takes a possessive apostrophe, and the Age refers to a singular hero … all seems fine with that headline. I’m confused now.

and the article then referred to the woman with de Waard as his sister and then girlfriend in consecutive paragraphs.

    Oop’s!

I reckon they could argue that event’s could stand for “event has” but I’m not buying it if they do.

I’m with em above – he’s A hero (singular)… it’s HIS welcome (possessive)… therefore could it not be “a hero’s welcome”? I know the phrase “heroes’ welcome” gets tossed around a bit when discussing teams of Olympians, etc, but as this is one guy….

    ?

Re: Your Update – oh! I obviously didn’t read any of the other sentence’s. I am an idiot.
