Top Gear Australia Appears To Be Changing Down Gears, Possibly On The Verge Of Stalling

topgearlulz.jpgLast week I declared that the real indication of Top Gear Australia’s success would not be the fantastic ratings for the first episode, but rather how many viewers decided to bother tuning into the second episode. Given the general air of disappointment from viewers regarding the show in the letters section of the paper – and in our very own comments section from discerning readers who had watched the debut – I suspected there may be a drop in ratings due, and it seems I was right.

The second episode of motoring TV show Top Gear Australia has slumped in the ratings.

Producers had hoped to crack the one million viewer mark last night, but instead only 674,000 tuned in, down more than 250,000 viewers from its premiere the week before. Top Gear Australia finished last in its timeslot behind Border Security, The 7.30 Report and Australian Idol.

Poor The Top Gear Australia, sad face, etc.

A commenter over at news.com.au stated “Second episode was better than the first” but I was out and about dj-ing (at a fashion launch, no less! Ladies of Melbourne, get some Hazel, the new label from Hummingbird 60 owner/spunk rat Nat Camilleri, into you! It’s bloody ace!) and missed the second show.

Reliable readers, dare I ask for them again… your thoughts?

Also: do you love that I managed to make a post about cars briefly diverge into a plug for ladies fashion? That takes some skill. Or, more likely, an inability to focus on one subject for too long.

They’ve done a great job on copying the photographic style. What they don’t have is charm or quirkiness – the hosts are dull, they don’t gel, & even the audience doesn’t know when to laugh or respond. Their voiceovers are wooden, they read from an autocue. And I need a translator – no-one says “grouse” etc like the small Richard-aspirant, & “Wazza” speaks in cliches & strine that the audience demographic doesn’t – the show has so many Australian cliches & stereotypes it makes me cringe watching it. It’s made for the lowest common denominator. They’re never going to rubbish an Aussie made car – they’ll run out of suppliers. Boring, charmless, embarassing. Dump it, SBS.

Well said Mark H… Nail on the head.

I will make one concession… If they dumped Charlie Cox, the rest of the show *might* just be redeemable. Whilst that sap is at the helm, I won’t be going back. He is irritating beyond description.

Two episodes of this dross is enough for me, I’m afraid. It doesn’t matter how much polish you use, if you’re putting a shine on a turd, it’s still just a turd.

I don’t understand why they didn’t convince someone like Dieter Kahsnitz (formerly of ‘the C word’ on Channel 31) who already has a cult following. Deiter’s clever execution and true insight into what interests people could have been a winner. He could have broken it out of the UK Top Gear mould a little too.

Charlie cox is ok I suppose but about as funny as a plane crash. Steve Pizzati needs to be dumped he just is so irritating I felt an overwehlming desire to transport a besser block thru the plasma screen. He erks me. He is just too much. Warren brown is the man for the top job, he is the kind of man u need leading top gear australia as he has done peeking to paris, and knows a thing or two being a cartoonist for such a long time. I hear he has a car or two of no ordinary nature in his back yard shed also. TOP GEAR AUSTRALIA – Good idea – but you need funny poeple – not ordinary poeple TRYING to be funny.

    heh heh heh.
Two episodes in and everyone has written them off already.
    Go Aussie.

    Hi,

I don’t think it as bad as it is made out. It was always going to be tough when the original is so well known. Just remeber you are comparing these guys to season 10 and 11 of the original. Go and get season one from the UK and compare it to that.

i have all tguk dvd’s including the season1 and i must say that the s1 is 1000% better than this sad parody. presenters are so full of themselves trying to be funny while in fact they are ridiculous and that ageing leather bag faced Cox takes the cake what a pompous moron. if this is the typical aussie bloke im ashamed beiing one

  • Would just like you guys and gals to know that Dieter is currently concentrating on the online version of ‘the c word’. We’ll be filming new eps soon and would appreciate any suggestions. I find it very interesting reading what you have to say and wholeheartedly agree with the comments. We’d appreciate if you check out our website, subscribe to our itunes link to help Dieter make a great car show. Yes we don’t have a huge budget and what drives this project is Dieter’s love of all things automotive, but the more seats on bums or eyeballs on websites we can muster would go a long way to supporting the non spoiled entertainment of the tv industry. Thanks for ya’ time! http://www.cword.tv
