Defamer Australia Talks To Sia About Tila Tequila, Lindsay Lohan, And Writing Songs With A Certain Pop Star
Here’s a little extract from our interview with the amazing Sia, where we discussed reality television, Samantha Ronson and Lindsay Lohan, and the Very Big Pop Star she’ll be writing with in November..

DA: I read that you’re a pop culture junkie, you used to watch Rock Of Love and Tila Teqila, is that right?
SIA: Oh my gosh, I love reality TV.
DA: Let’s talk about it!
SIA: I have this thing called TiVo. I live in New York, and it’s – I swear, you can record any program and you can go home and watch them and fast forward the adverts! And any boring bits, like where they repeat things due to lazy editing. And oh my gosh, I loved Rock Of Love, it was so amazing! Tila Tequila? Amazing. Project Runway? Amazing. America’s Next Top Model? Amazing.
DA: Did you see the second series of Tila Tequila?
SIA: Umm, yeah!
DA: Is that the one where the girl said no in the end?
SIA: Yeah!
DA: I felt so bad for her!
SIA: I know! But didn’t you think she seemed really unhappy in the second series? She had gotten a bit spotty, and she seemed kind of unhealthy and she kind of seemed like she hated herself. It was weird, in the first one she seemed much more gracious and sweet, and it was almost like she believed in the process – that really, she could find love. And in the second one, it just felt like she was upset and sad it hadn’t worked out, and she was just doing it for the money, and maybe at the last minute she felt like that big blonde girl was her best option.. Kristy? Kirsty? And then she got dissed, and – oh, I just can’t even believe it. I feel so sorry for her, cos I feel like she was already in a bad place.
DA: I know! When she broke down in tears – I hadn’t even watched the whole series, and I was just gripped. The good thing is we all know she’s now moved on, and she has a very happy lady friend.
SIA: Yeah, she’s going out with someone who was rumoured to be L-Lo’s girlfriend, right?
DA: I know, Courtney Semel!
SIA: So fun!
DA: And what do you reckon about Samantha Ronson and Lindsay Lohan? I, personally, am two thumbs up, could not be happier for them.
SIA: Me too! I think they are so beautiful, so lovely.
DA: I love them!
SIA: And I am aquaintances with Sam, so.. you know, I don’t know if they’re friends or lovers, or whatever, but I think they’re both really nice people.
DA: They’ve just admitted that they’re lovers on radio.
SIA: That’s nice!
DA: Lindsay did…
SIA: (genuinely pleased) That’s nice for them!
DA: … and I like the way she did it, too. She could have done a million dollar People magazine cover, but instead she was on the phone and someone said “How long have you been together?” and she went “A long time…”. I love that!
SIA: Awwww, that’s rad!
DA: I love that in this day and age, Lindsay Lohan getting a girlfriend and cleaning up is actually great career move..
SIA: That’s awesome, isn’t it?
DA: Twenty years ago, that would have been the end of her career, but now everyone’s like “Thank god she found that nice girl, not like those bastards who were using her.”
SIA: And she is a really nice person too, so I think that’s awesome, I’m really happy for her.
DA: Can you pass on my personal congratulations to Sam?
SIA: (laughing) I will! I’ll send her a text!
DA: Send her a text saying “This bitch in Australia who you don’t know could not be happier for you!”
SIA: “Someone you’ve never met, someone you’ll probably never meet, is really happy for you!”
DA: Tell her if she gets approached on MySpace by some strange girl from Australia with a very self-conscious self-portrait as her photo…
SIA: … what is it, is it you with your hair in front of your face?
DA: I actually, I got a fake fringe because I didn’t have one, and I put the fringe right in front of my face, and I had to apply SO much eye liner, and then it was quite hard getting the gentle scrapes on my wrist from the blunt Lady Bic visible while my arm was in front of the camera to capture the whole thing…
SIA: (laughs evilly)
DA: So if she gets a message from that girl saying “If you want to come on my late night community radio show, feel free – big friend of Sia” – you back me up, okay?
SIA: (mocking tone) BIIIIIIIIIIIIG FRIIEEEEEEEEEND!
DA: Big friend!
SIA: WE BIG FRIENDS!
DA: I do sound like an English As A Second Language student, don’t I? “ME BIG FRIEND WITH SIA!”
SIA: (laughs)
DA: This is going really well, I’m happy.
SIA: Good, I’m so glad.
DA: I don’t think you’re being sincere anymore, but I love it anyway.
SIA: No, no – I am! I am! I’m not a meanie! I’m nice!
DA: I know, you seem very nice. Now, I want to ask you – I just read something on your Wikipedia page, and I’m assuming every word of it is true…
SIA: Oh yeah, pretty much, I’m sure.
DA: Have you collaborated with Christina Aguilera?
SIA: Oh! Well, while I can’t talk about that question, what I can say is that I’m going to LA in November to write with a really big pop star, whose voice is probably the best voice of any pop star at the moment.
DA: (gasps) Oh my god, that’s so exciting! You and Heidi from The Hills?
SIA: (laughs) Yeah, me and Heidi Montag.
DA: That’s awesome! That’s going to be a great career move for you, too! Do you think Spencer will come into the studio?
SIA: I hope so, because I just find him so… he’s so charming!
DA: He’s sexy! He’s got that thing… charisma.
SIA: (saucily) CHARISMA!
DA: Well, the good thing about that unnamed pop star who may or may not be Heidi from The Hills, and certainly isn’t Christina Aguilera, is that when rock chicks write her a good pop song, she just belts ‘em out… Like ‘Beautiful’ by Linda Perry.
SIA: That’s my favourite song of hers.
Very good. I can’t be bothered transcribing any further at the moment, but I’ll pop some more interview snippets up later.
