Radiothon Last Week Went Rather Well… Wanna Listen?

Woo! Clem and yours truly are now both resting up after a rather full on last week in which we – and all the other volunteers on Melbourne community radio station RRR – attempted to inspire listeners to subscribe to the station for another year in a festival of begging known as Radiothon.

Everything went rather well, and I thought I might pop some mp3s for your listening pleasure (or pain, depending on perspective) over the next week. You know, if you’re into it.

My show I’d Rather Jack’s Radiothon Spacktacular ended up turning into a massive party. Joined on the night by Clemmy, as well as a host of musicians including The Ukeladies, The Brutals, Lilith Lane, Abby Dobson & Matt Gurry, Damian FitzGerald aka Underwaterman, Talei Wolfgramm, and the handsome Dan Kelly – and a bunch of boozing buddies who came in to watch the action live on air – I could not be happier with how the evening turned out.

Thanks to everyone who subscribed, and remember – it’s not too late to go to rrr.org.au and put your money where your mouth is! It’s NEVER too late!

Alright, on to the mp3s. Soon I’ll pop up some magic from Talei & Damian, Dan Kelly, Dave McCormack re-doing OutKast, and the freakiest cover of Haddaway you’ll ever hear as provided by The Drones, but for now, I thought I’d bang up me and The Bastow’s contributions to the evening.

JUMP! FOR OUR AUDIO-LOVE! The first song? This is Your Editor and my dear pal George banging out what we’ve lovingly titled “A Medley Of Shit”. We ended up performing this twice on the night – once soberly and alone at the beginning of the evening, and a second time (after being egged on by our mates) at the end of the night with backing vocals provided by the aforementioned live studio audience.

This is the second version. A bit of beer had been consumed by this time, and I forgot the words to Coldplay. This may be for the best. Can you spot all the songs we included?

George & Jess – “The Medley Of Shit”

Alright, this next one is one of my favourites from the evening! Acclaimed Jazz Singer TM Sophie Brous does the show before mine on RRR. I’d asked her to maybe do a cover for a lark but on the night she confessed she hadn’t organised anything. Boo. However – perhaps inspired by the liquor flowing in the kitchen and the great company – an hour into the show, she and Clem and the handsome Damian FitzGerald (who only met Clem and Sophie that night) printed off the lyrics to an Aaliyah song, practiced for five minutes in the disabled toilets, and then jumped on air to do it live.

Unbelievably awesome. And check out the Bastow’s rapping/record scratching skillz!

Sophie, Clem & Damian – “Try Again”

More tunes from the actual stars of the night soon.

I really liked the “briki briki” stylings of ‘Clembaland’ Bastow.
