Let’s Discuss Lady GaGa’s Performance On Rove, Shall We?

ladygagagaga.jpgIf you watched Rove on Sunday night – AND WHY WOULDN’T YOU, THE BOY NEXT DOOR HAS WON THE HEART OF THE NATION, GOOD ENOUGH FOR KEVIN RUDD, ETC! – you would have seen both unfunny comedian Dane Cook (seriously, nothing he said, nothing, made me even smile. And I wasn’t planning on being a hater! Also, there’s this which kinda cements him as a fool in my mind) and new pop sensation Lady GaGa.

Now, I love pop. So does Bastow. If you haven’t picked up on that during your time on Defamer Australia, then let me hammer it home. Me and Pop used to fool around as kids. There was a brief period in high school where I didn’t want to be seen anywhere near Pop, and then once I stopped caring about what other people thought of me, I realised that what me and Pop had was something special, you know? And sometimes we see other people, and sometimes I look at some of the folks associated with Pop and think “What are you doing?! They don’t deserve to be linked to you! They’re bringing you down, ruining your rep!” but Pop has a mind of its own and I have to respect that. Nay, I have to love that. And I do.

So I wanted to LOVE Lady GaGa’s appearance on Rove. I do like ‘Just Dance’ as a song, truly (although I prefer the sheer awesomeness and enthusiasm of Ladyhawke, or the shameless feel good hook-heavy Danish stylings of Alphabeat) but I was completely underwhelmed by her performance on Sunday night. Her pretentiousness during the interview before hitting the stage was almost adorable, but not quite. And then there was the performance itself…Mel from A Wild Young Under-Whimsy, whose post today about GaGa (that’s apparently what were supposed to call her when we’re feeling familiar, or so she told Rove) reminded me that I meant to bring this up the topic of Ms Gaga’s performance yesterday but forgot due to a lack of brain cells and the distraction of battling with temperamental internet connection, certainly didn’t enjoy the show. Here’s some of what she said:

On Sunday I was watching the end of Rove while waiting for Dexter to start, and I witnessed a sight so embarrassing that I could barely look at the screen. It was this creature called Lady GaGa who looks like bargain basement Gwen Stefani and sounds like… whatever heavily autotuned pop sluts sound like without their autotuner. For some reason she was wearing these glasses that looked like twin televisions. Then she said, in a retarded fake British accent like the one Britney used to affect during the dark times of 2007: “Hello, my name is Lady GaGa. And this is Rove.”

And then the shrieks of teenage girls rang out like klaxons warning of an imminent pop shitstorm!

Ha, yes, I forgot about the “Hello, my name is Lady Gaga. And this is Rove” – it was rather cringey. And it was also sort of weird watching twenty teenage girls rocking out as Lady GaGa attempted to deliver, one assumes, a stadium worthy production on a tiny stage with a budget of $20 (mostly spent on glitter).

In short, it was a bit rubbish.

BUT WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS – are you going to go my way? And also, did you watch the above clip and think it brilliant? Why? Or did you go to any of her live shows during her time in Oz, and if so – how was it? Because I really want to like Lady GaGa more than I do. Convince me. She can’t stay in my good books solely cos ‘Just Dance’ forever, you know. And lord knows staying in my good books must be top of her list of priorities.

    Ha! Thats so fucked.

Pretty sure Rove has jumped the shark.

For someone who claims to have such a long term relationship with Pop, you forget that she is shallow and a bit silly but heaps of fun. Consider the alternative…Bono.

ED: Your point about Bono is noted. But the thing is, pop can be shallow and silly but good, surely? That just seemed a bit… weak! And not in a funny way!

  • Mel

Thanks for the shout-out, Jess! I’d like to add that I think what’s playing on the twin televisions at the beginning is actually the video for this song.

I actually think (from the one episode I saw in full and the 15 or so minutes I sometimes catch before Dexter) that Rove is better now than ever. The panel format is working to help distract from the fact that he’s not a very good interviewer, and I always enjoy that “These Things We Love” bit at the end.

    mixer should be shot.

She did MUCH better on the US So You Think You Can Dance, with three times as many back-up dancers and ten times the budget though. It WOULD be pretty tiring doing the same old routine in 15 different countries. Plus, as IF she was gonna pull out all the stops for ROVE. I reckon you guys underestimate this chick… I predict big things

  • porly

Agree – good pop is good. I think I have lower expectations of live pop…I’m not shocked or disappointed when it is not as good live as it is on CD or whatever – the recorded version is unashamedly performance enhanced!

Kind of like not being surprised when a nutritional analysis of Big Macs reveals high fat and salt, or when a testicle pops out of the suit of a “female” western european weightlifter…

  • porly

    Some corrections
    1. I obviously meant Eastern European, not Western. I might expect a small washed-rind cheese to pop out from a western european female weightlifters outfit, but not a testicle.
    2. I am defending someone called Gaga…

    Thanks.

Right. But most performers, especially young ones give iffy performances at one time or another. How about this video for the show Dirty Sexy Money. Isn’t pop mostly just about the kinetic energy of it? She’s got that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pk2HT0jLFA

Did anyone watch her on Mel and Kochie on Friday? (or was it Satdee or Monday?) Anyway, they were at Fed Square at about 8am in the morning and it was absolutely woeful. I had never heard of her and almost felt sorry for her if she didn’t have the ‘tude’ blaring. What’s with the frozen sunglass routine? She is embarrassingly baaaaad. Mel and Kochie were so funny and were like ‘wow, isn’t she…great!’ ‘I love her shoes’

  • EFKO FROM MEXICO

I think Lady GaGa is great a very crazy and with an insane taste for dress, but very lovely… cheers from Mexico City.

  • Em

Yeah, I saw her on Sunrise, and it was terrible. Ruined my day. Really, she was arrogant, and is clearly so rehearsed on her routine that it lacks any of the energy i love in pop.
And on liking pop, its the same as any other genre, there will be good and bad music. That being said i did get too cool for pop in high school.. But I’ve been back for many many years, and I ain’t leaving!

  • Ems

I wanted to like her too but in the end it was just too hard.

In the interview beforehand she said we’d be seeing something special with the set she was performing on. It was bare and all that was different about the performance was those tv glasses.

And she couldn’t help but answer rove’s joke questions with serious answers about how much she loved Bowie.

Plus it was a pretty bad vocal performance. Gaga pick up your game!

As someone who has worked with as a live sound engineer, I would propose that ignorant idiots with comments like these should be shot.
A mixer cannot fix a crap performer. The fact of the matter is that this girl plainly cannot sing well enough to perform live.
The autotuner has had a terrible impact on the music industry as a whole. Literally anybody could sound as good as her on a CD if their vocals were processed as heavily.

Unfortunately thanks to our consumerist culture, people are all too willing to snap up stuff like this even when it is quite easy to tell if the vocals are natural or not.

Ok, normally I would hold my peace and not say anything, however, I have to give the Lady that is GaGa some props.
I saw her at her Sydney gig and I must say, she sounded nothing like she did on Rove or Sunrise. She was singing live at the show and I had a really wicked time. I was “dragged” along by a friend to see what would possibly be a life changing experience. Turns out it was! She brought the fame and made me want to be a part of her world! So in short, she is the future.
Her name is Lady GaGa and she aint going no where folks!

  • lady gaga is bomb!

I loveee lady gaga and i am glad she is the new face of pop music! I think she is such an inspiration because she

Although I do agree, the performance was somewhat disappointing – quite terrible actually – I still like Lady GaGa and her songs, I also feel you should have touched more on WHY you didn’t like the performance, what was the specific thing that you didn’t like about it, you have described a small proportion of the performance, why don’t you bring it home by explaining in better detail?

Other than that, thanks for the discussion
