Defamer Australia Chum’s Facebook Banning Now Top News

Words cannot describe how hard I laughed when I just saw this image on the smh.com.au front page.

Here’s what happened. Sydney writer Elmo Keep, whose time spent with KISS frontman Gene Simmons was well documented on here, recently found herself banned from Facebook. Which was vaguely hilarious for her friends, because Elmo loves Facebook more than anyone I know . As the Facebook group “95,000,000 Strong For Elmo Keep’s Facebook Reinstatement” created by our own Clem Bastow so aptly put it:

WTF Facebook? You deleted Elmo Keep’s Facebook profile for no reason, and then subjected her to the Facebook cone of Customer Support silence.

There are drongos on here spamming people with their porn blogs and shitty outer suburban nightclub functions, and you chose to delete Elmo, who “does” Facebook better than any of us?

SHE WAS YOUR BIGGEST FAN, AND YOU THREW HER AWAY! AND IF YOU CAN’T SEE THAT, THAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PROBLEM!

Of course, smh.com.au looks at the issue in a slightly less hysterical way, and raises some interesting issues.

Facebook users with even slightly unusual names beware: your account can be suspended by the site’s draconian administrators without warning and your personal information held to ransom until you show them a government-issued ID.

Elmo does point out though that while the site’s administrators may be “draconian”, they are also a business and can do whatever the hell they like. Facebook is a privilege, not a right! Or something!

The whole experience has led Keep to question the sense in relying so heavily on social networking sites and entrusting a faceless corporation with so much of our personal information.

“People take for granted I think that it is a service provided by a corporate but because it features such familiarity of your own and it is that idea of a ‘my space’ that you’ve created, you kind of forget that it is actually a business model controlled by someone else as they see fit,” she said.

The article itself actually is rather interesting if you’re a Facebook user. I recommend you have a read.

Have you been banned from Facebook? Tell us about it!

I couldn’t get banned from farcebook if I tried (apparently my comments about how shit the site is and how much I hate it go unnoticed, so I should probably try offering porn along with my opinions)

Though major props to Clem for perhaps the best use of an Almost Famous reference ever!

Read through the comments on the “95,000,000 Strong…” group page, and learn of the similar plight of fellow banned Facebooker, Cannonball Bob…
