Where Do We Even Begin With This Trailer For 'An American Carol'?
Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 6:00 AM on August 16, 2008
We have learned a great many things during this election year, but chief among them is that Republicans hate Hollywood (though not really). In fact, their vendetta against Tinseltown is so strong that they have now seized the means of production, which would at least explain the trailer for the upcoming right-wing comedy An American Carol — that is, if anything could explain An American Carol. A spoof of The Christmas Carol from Republican director David Zucker, it's the story of a Michael Moore-resembling filmmaker who is shown the error of his ways by a cast made up of Hollywood's biggest Republicans. If that description sounds a little dry, try these details on for size: the Moore stand-in comes to his senses when he is taught to kill members of the ACLU, and George Washington is played by Jon Voight. A closer look at the insanity, after the jump:
As egregious and anti-funny as nearly every beat in the trailer is (we were especially partial to Gary Coleman's slave-talkin'), they all pale in comparison to this scene, teased by Reason:
In a clip we saw, Washington takes Malone to St. Paul's Cathedral to lecture him on freedom of religion and "freedom of speech, which you abuse." Malone is grossed out by dust in the priest's box, so the doors open onto the smoldering ruins of the World Trade Centre. "This is the dust of 3000 innocent human beings!" bellows Washington. Malone whimpers that he's just making movies. Washington won't have it. "Is that what you plan to say on Judgment Day?"
As enticing as that scene sounds, we can't wait for Zucker's own Judgment Day explanation of My Boss's Daughter and BASEketball. Forced to plead his case after a spiritual journey led by Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, will Zucker see the light?

We have learned a great many things during this election year, but chief among them is that Republicans

The movie was absolutely outstanding & it never ceases to amaze me how things can be slanted to fit the agenda of the author. I don't want to make any decision for you, but I encourage you to go see this movie if you have any free thought left... Decide for yourself, you be the judge

I really like The Naked Gun. ...That makes this even harder to take.
And it's not that I don't think Michael Moore is worthy of ridicule either. ...He is.
It's that I just watched the least funny trailer I've ever seen and then read the phrase, "the dust of 3000 innocent human beings."

To be a master of satire you first require a basic understanding of reality.
The concept for this movie comes about 6 years too late, and even then, it's not funny. Silly, Republicans, we only enjoy laughing at you, and even there this movie fails. I don't even feel upset, just embarrassed for Zucker & Co.

Poor right-wing lunatics of America. All they want is to make the world laugh, but the can't top the ongoing eight-year joke that is their president.

At least Coleman's resumed his career as a cameo actor, rather than doing more uncomfortable interviews about his virginity. And does anyone sufficiently identify with Moore himself to be offended by this movie?

That's weird cause David directed the Naked Gun 2 1/2 which had an overt environmental green agenda throughout and pummeled Barbara Bush.

Methinks creativity, in terms of dealing with the full palette of human emotions, requires an open heart and a willingness to picture yourself in someone else's Birkenstocks for a while. So, while there are lots of wonderful anomalies on either side of the fence--Ezra Pound and Neil Young, for example--the ability to make art that moves people to tears or catalyzes life changes will always largely belong to people who are alarmingly pro-social and democratic. On the udder hand, if you want to hire someone who can shred pension plans, lay off thousands, and not lose any sleep about it, don't hire Michael Moore. Likewise if you want a shitty, blustery movie that resorts to spectacle whenever real human emotions threaten to intrude. That's life. Full stop.

@Leviticus_71: These are people who consider (M)ann Coulter intellectual AND funny and who don't bat an eyelash when Mary Matalin says that Jerome Corsi's tissue of lies 'The Obama Nation' is 'a piece of scholarship'.
They are idiots. Let them have their idiot playhouse where they can put on their idiot puppet shows.
Maybe they will become so engrossed in their silliness that they leave the business of governing to people who aren't morons, thieves and/or pedophiles...

@WGARefugee: The idea that only so-called "progressive" people can be funny is a pretty silly one.
Take Michael Moore. Now, today, put him in charge of a company that has no choice but to lay people off in order to survive. He if he does so (as he must) does that mean he's no longer Michael Moore? No, it only means he's now a guy with actual real life responsibility. He still has the ability to laugh and poke fun at things.

ok, so there's this rich frat-boy who goes awol from the national guard he's using to avoid 'nam,' and then he buys and sells a baseball team, then becomes governor, suppresses a DUI from Maine in the press, somehow gets elected Prez and lies the country into a war to avoid a recession and make his buddies rich.
I forgot the punch line. Oh right, there isn't one.

@MrRewrite: Cool. I got one about a habitual liar that spent much of his "governing" time accepting blow jobs in the White House. Well, this might apply to several past Presidents, but I think you know who I mean. This one did little when terrorist groups attacked the US abroad, leading to a 9/11 style attack shortly after he left office.
Let's compare notes and do lunch one day. Between the goofy frat boy and the redneck bullshit artist, we might have the pieces of one good script.

The fact that it seems to offend so many here makes it that much more appealing.

First off, fuck you, Farley. As if your barely-talented brother's memory needed more dishonoring...
And making the original Airplane buys a filmmaker considerable leeway in their subsequent career--but that account was overdrawn many suck-ass films ago, even before the creepy neo-con court jester routine.
In sum: you and your Bill O'Reilly-approved "comedy" can suck a stale dick and die. That goes for you too, cinerama.

@NoWireHangers: Does David Zucker remember the party of the President, Vice-President, Secretary of Defense and the National Security Advisor on September 11, 2001?
No, I didn't think so...
There is a wonderful but cumbersome acronymesque collection of letters that are very popular with we who didn't drink the kool aid: IOKIYAR
And they work for pedophile congressmen who support anti-kiddie porn legislation, Secretaries of State who shoe shop and see 'Spam-A-Lot'while people are lying dead in an American city and Commanders in Chief who, when shown evidence that 'Bin Laden Determined to Strike Inside the US' tells the CIA officers bringing this information to him in August, 2001, 'OK, you can go home now. You've covered your asses'.
What do those letters stand for?
It's OK If You Are Republican.
Oh, and Mr. Zucker: They may not be dust, but there are about 750,000 innocent people in Iraq who would be living and breathing now if we had gone after Osama Bin Ladin rather than the Iraqi oil fields.
And no unfunny, preachy, false 'comedy' is going to change that fact.
God, I hope that POS doesn't even make it to video...
