Wait, what? In the middle of an otherwise routine NY Daily News article that details the trouble Republicans have convincing celebrities to attend their upcoming convention (but wait, don't they hate celebrities?), this little bombshell is dropped: "When asked about Republican stars like Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dennis Hopper, Kelsey Grammer and Chuck Norris, G.O.P. convention spokeswoman Melissa Subbotin said the party was not ready to announce its roster at this time." Dennis Hopper? Did we miss the memo that said the countercultural director of freaking Easy Rider was a Republican? We'd assumed his appearance in the right-wing Zucker film An American Carol was a strict paycheck gig, but no — Wikipedia confirms it, listing two donations the actor has made to the RNC. We'll leave the blacklisting to Jeffrey Wells, but we hope this doesn't portend an eventual run for office from the actor. After all, if Gopher could do it... [NY Daily News]

Sean Penn must be soiling his bloodstained underwear about having a son named Hopper Jack right about now.

Dennis Hopper mentioned that he was a Republican on one of the DVD extras for Land of the Dead. I had the same WTF reaction you had. He also mentioned that he based his villainous character on Donald Rumsfeld. So I guess he hasn't completely gone to the Dark Side.

I heard Hopper had already turned Republican by the time he shot "Colors".

There's also James Woods, John Malkovich (who is more small "L" libertarian than card carrying GOP) John Voight, and ironically enough, exiled Hollywood uber-liberal Ron Silver.
And unless Barack Obama can convince her that he won't prematurely evacuate Iraq, Angelina Jolie will be voting for McCain as well.

a quick read of Peter Fonda's book would have cleared this up... he went "Repub," as Fonda puts it, around the time that his bloodstream cleared.

Gary Sinise leads a weekly meeting of Hollywood Republicans; the group is called "The Friends of Abe."

The Friends of Abe who are also Friends of Dorothy are called Log Cabin Republicans.

The funny thing is, typecasting people via their political leanings is something liberals accuse conservatives of doing all the time...

@Little Mintz Sunshine:
As a Canadian, I ironically know more about your American politics than the average American so I prepared a little guide to some of the various subspecies of Republicans and Democrats.
Republicans:
NEOCONS- Disaffected liberals who support terrorist smacking.
PALEOCONS- Pat Buchanan style isolationists who not only oppose the war in Iraq & Afghanistan, but think WW2 was a "foreign misadventure."
LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS- Gay Republicans.
LIBERTARIANS- Not the Libertarian Party, per se, but folks who support small government, low taxes, and the right to smoke, drink, and eat what they want without The Man telling them no.
SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES- Law & order, pro-life, and pro-old time values. (Sub-sub-species Evangelicals are more openly religious social conservatives)
FISCAL CONSERVATIVES- Cut taxes, shrink government, and getting out of people's lives.
Democrats:
KOS KIDS- Internet savvy, highly motivated, and rabidly anti-Republican and anti-everything any Republican likes.
HOLLYWOOD DEMOCRATS- Essentially the rich, the famous, and the liberal. The rich and un-famous are Gated Community Democrats.
REAGAN DEMOCRATS- Working class folks who vote Democrat normally, but vote Republican when the radical fringe creeps them out.
THE GREENS- Environmentalists who think the sun shines out of Al Gore's backside.
NEO-HIPPIES- Folks trying to relive or revive the spirit of the 60s. (Older version of Kos Kids)
ONE WORLDERS- Democrats who think the United Nations will solve every problem on Earth.
MACHINE MEN- Democrats who run the big city political machines that get Democratic candidates elected and money raised.
I hope that clears things up for you. ;)

But if you are really Canadian, you'll always have the privilege, nay, honor, of being the birth country of one Mr. Kiefer Sutherland.
