Maybe Barack Obama is a celebrity after all: According to the AP, more than 38 million viewers tuned in to watch the Democratic nominee's DNC speech last night. Even excepting the uncounted audience who tuned in via C-SPAN, PBS, or online, "Nielsen Media Research said more people watched Obama speak than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final American Idol or the Academy Awards this year." If next week's Republican National Convention has got its work cut out for it, John McCain might want to start with a VP pick who's got more ratings power than the lead from 30 Rock. [AP]

Unless McCain does a Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction pull to expose Sarah Palin nip, I don't see an audience that is even a tenth of this.

Barry gave the greatest speech of his career. The 2008 Democratic Convetion was the convention. While Gramps surprised us all with his Veep pick, I don't know what he could possibly do to compete with the all-star perfection of the DNC Convention: The Clintons, Al Gore, fireworks, Stevie Wonder, everyday Americans, Shawn Johnson, J.Hud. It was beautiful.

@NoWireHangers: And yet, you have to admit not many people are talking about Obama's speech today.

If the runner up of Miss Alaska 1984 becomes POTUS, I move to France. And I hate France.

Only in America... celebritizing everyone... not that it's a bad thing... I just can't see us Canucks doin that with Chretien or Harper... they don't have the coolness or badassery as Barack... hell... his name alone is badass!
Then again... we're serious about politics... and we act like it too.

Not a brilliant move, but certainly clever. It's just another play in the gamesmanship that this election has become. It's not about the serious, serious issues this country faces, it's about who can score points for their team.
