Mackenzie Phillips Ignores 'No Gels, Liquids, Or Smack Balloons' Signs At LAX
Posted by Seth at 4:03 AM on August 28, 2008
One Day at a Time is both the title of a seminal postfeminist late-'70s sitcom and a 12-step mantra, and both apply to its star and recovering substance-abuser Mackenzie Phillips. IMDb lists her as having been clean and sober since 1992, but TMZ is reporting that the actress was arrested today at LAX, allegedly for possession of heroin and coke. She's currently in custody:
At 10:00 AM, officers responded to Terminal 4, where Phillips was being screened by TSA. During the screening process, some baggies and balloons believed to contain heroin and cocaine were recovered.
Obviously, this marks a significant backwards step in Phillips's recovery. It now remains to be seen if her first public statement on that matter will demand privacy at this difficult time, or instead go the Tatum O'Neal route, blaming everything from a dead dog to background research, before eventually lavishing praise on the compassionate TSA workers who saved her from a serious and impending relapse.

Give her a break... She was trying to take care of her jet-lag, but Eva Mendes drank all the goddamn Red Bulls.

This is so heart-breaking. Mackenzie Phillips struggled for so many years to get off drugs. And she beat it and gave everyone hope that they could too.
If Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson announce they are getting a divorce, I'm jumping off of a cliff.

I just wanted to post an apology if my previous comment offended anyone. I meant nothing malicious or unkind by it and if it came across that way I am genuinely sorry. I promise you that was not my intent.

Baggies and balloons sounds invasive.

When they say "recovered" that usually involves laxatives, rubber gloves and a cavity search.

And just a note on the Jeopardy answer posted in the picture, Valerie Bertinelli is not married to Eddie Van Halen anymore.

To be fair, the sign doesn't specifically mention anything about heroin balloons. However, one has to be stoopid to put those in one's luggage...this is what body orifices were made for.

@Scout 3.0: The problem is you never beat it - you just keep it from beating you.
Perhaps the "recovery" process employed by TSA should be filmed and shown as part of a Public Service Announcement. Envisioning a group of strangers with batons and rubber gloves surrounding you at the Orlando Airport should be enough to scare anyone straight.

Baggies and balloons? Isn't that why they invented cokepants?

Are we sure she wasn't just carrying it for Tatum O'Neal, who just needed it for research for a role?

Her dad taught her how to roll joints when she was 10 and how to inject cocaine when she was 17 but he never taught her how not to get busted at airports. There's no excuse for this kind of neglect.

Oh, much ado about nothing. They advise you to put your drugs in plastic baggies - she just put hers in colored balloons for smuggling, that's all. Silly mistake. Use clear, plastic balloons for heroin and cocaine, that's the TSA way.

Damn! Not any of the posters so far, btw, but people snarking on addicts really piss me off. Why do they do this stuff? Because they're ADDICTS! Unless you are one, you can't possibly understand, much less pass judgement. Obviously someone who is carrying baggies and balloons through an airport isn't thinking clearly! Once this monkey is on your back, you never get rid of it. It's a life sentence, even if it is self-inflicted. The patronizing tone of some people makes me want to rip my hair out. They'll never get it, and fucking wonderful for them.

@drunkashell: "It's a life sentence, even if it's self inflicted".
That's the point. Once you've gained sobriety, it's YOUR job to keep clean. It's not easy, but lots of folks do it.
That said, a slip is a slip. Hopefully this kind of public acknowlegement may actually help her get/stay clean again. You have to hit bottom to want to reach for the top. Misplaced "kindness" and "understanding" is the same old co-dependant bullshit that keeps addicts running around and around like hampsters on a running wheel.
The good news? She's alive and has another chance at sobriety. The bad? Party's over. For now.
Tough love baby, all the way.
