I’d Rather Jack Radiothon Spacktacular On RRR!

Hello good readers,

As you may or may not be aware, I present a “cult” (that means “not too many listeners because it’s on very late, although the masturbating truck driver massive are a loyal audience”) radio show on Melbourne’s RRR 102.7FM called I’d Rather Jack.

On this show, I get to play whatever the damn hell I like (so playlists tend to include Stiff Little Fingers followed by Kylie followed by Otis Redding followed by Girls Aloud followed by The Drones followed by Angie Hart followed by Billy Ocean followed by YOU GET MY POINT) which is sort of great – especially the Billy Ocean part. I have RRR to thank for this rare wireless-molesting freedom.
I also have guests come in every fortnight and program the show whilst telling vaguely defamatory stories about their time in the world of music. This year I’ve spoken to Pete ‘Lucky’ Luscombe from the RocKwiz Orchestra/a thousand amazing bands, Lilith Lane, Deborah Conway, Stephen Cummings, Angie Hart, and Sebastian Bach (amongst others). They were all brilliant.

ANYWAY.

Tonight is the one show a year where we get to go wild, all in the name of inspiring subscriptions to the station. I’d Rather Jack Radiothon Spacktacular is traditionally an insane, slightly haphazard affair, and this year will be no different!

Joining us live in the studio to perform some covers will be The Ukeladies, Lilith Lane, The Brutals, Abby Dobson, Talei Wolfgramm, Underwaterman, and possibly others – I can’t remember!

Yours truly (accompanied by my beloved friend George) will be belting out a medley of shit in the first fifteen minutes of the show. Five songs of fury. I don’t want to give too much away, but I have two words for you – Tuckers and Daughter.

Clem will be popping into the studio for a reunion and also, she’ll be singing along to a karaoke track! What song? She will not tell me, alas!

Dave McCormack from Custard has sent in his amazing, recorded-especially-for-IRJ rendition of a certain OutKast song. IT IS AWESOME.

The aforementioned Pete Luscombe of RocKwiz Orchestra fame will be calling up even though he is on tour with Broad. I may even get Deborah Conway to speak to me once more, and see if she’s taken my advice and begun referring to all the women on the tour as ‘my bitches’.

Oh yeah – THE DRONES! THE MOTHERFUCKING DRONES! Honestly. As far as that last one is concerned, I am just about soiling myself with happiness. The Drones are touring overseas but have just sent over a recording of them ”covering” an especially cheesy early nineties dance hit, and it is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Gareth’s spoken word poetry for the verses had me on the floor (”When the winter’s icy breath blows coldly in your ear, love is like a luminous golden starchild with a heart like a ruby… or the sun………. I love you“). Dan Luscombe is a bloody GENIUS, and hopefully we’ll get him on the phone at some point too.

So, there you have it. OBVIOUSLY if you haven’t subscribed to RRR yet, you should. And if you’d like to do so tonight after 12am, please. I would be honoured. The number is 03 9388 1027.

If you’re not in Melbourne but would like to listen, you can stream (or X-STREAM as I like to call it) through rrr.org.au. And feel free to subscribe if you aren’t in Melbourne but have money to burn – along with the normal prizes for subscribing up for grabs, there’s a special prize for “out of sight” subscribers. You could win an 8G iTouch!

And there you go. Over and out!
