How to Derail a Junket: Ask Robert Downey Jr. Who He'd Like To 'Smoke a Blunt With'
Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 2:40 AM on August 6, 2008
Can't a little movie like Tropic Thunder catch a break? The Ben Stiller comedy has thus far managed to survive racism, ratings, "retards," and American Idol — and that's before it's even come out (Wednesday, August 13!). Still, all that was child's play compared to the newest Tropic trouble, instigated by an overzealous radio DJ who crashed the film's junket to ask Robert Downey Jr. some of the most inane questions Iron Man has ever had to face. Listen in horror as the notoriously rehabbed actor is asked which costar he'd like to "drink a brew and smoke a blunt with" (only the first of many, many stupid questions) — we've even provided a helpful assortment of what we can only imagine were Jack Black and Ben Stiller's reaction shots. Enjoy!

Oh, God, does that take me back to the stupid junkets I used to go on. Downey's quite a gent considering the provocation. The stupidest story I ever heard from one was the "reporter" on the original version of The Hitcher asking Jennifer Jason Leigh, "Considering how your father died, were you nervous working around the helicopter?"

With Stuttering John, the question is outrageous in an attempt to get a reaction ("Do you ever fart on your hand and smell it?"). This was just...blah.
My choice if I was in 'Nam? Christian Bale.

I can't hear the questions very well, only RDJ's responses, but from the article above, it sounds like the "reporter" is along the lines of Stuttering John from the Howard Stern Show.

I couldn't hear the questions either, but it's unlikely they were even half as good as the answers. RD Jr. is a saint! He didn't even kill that guy.

I would have asked him would he rather be stranded on a desert island with his ex-girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker or her über-cuddly husband Mattycakes.

RD Jr should have smoked that guy out!
Tropic Thunder will survive at least one odd against it - the release date is not a "13" Friday! As to Ben Stiller and other obstacles? I'm not so sure.

@regisgoat: Ha, I often hear such asinine questions from reporters when I cover public events - the worst was when a reporter asked a little girl what does it feel like to have her grandma locked up in jail where the bad people are. When you confront the reporters, they'll usually say, "Well, I only asked what's on everybody's mind!"

Fucking hacks. How did they get their jobs? Of all the stupid questions to ask RDJ, why those? Why not: When you were in prison how many guards passed you scripts? Also: In prison, you told Howard Stern a while back that you were forced to hang with the whites. Give us your take on racial segregation in the prison system.

I'm so confused. I've seen both extensive trailers and recent commercials for this picture. Why then is it not coming out until 2010? That's the closest August 13th that's a Friday. So much time to wait...

I think the Fourth Estate needs to have an estate sale to clear out the junk.

Downey Jr. handled it nicely, most others would've flipped on him quicker.
