Couch Jumper Richard Simmons Stops Just Shy of Declaring Love for Katie Holmes

David Letterman's Late Night couch has become the one-stop shop for celebrity revelations these days, whether it's Mindy Kaling breaking out her trusty Apu impression or Rosie Perez mistaking her co-star for a popular follicle stimulant. Late Show mainstay Richard Simmons at first seems poised for a similar breakthrough moment as he pulls a Tom Cruise, climbing aboard Dave's couch in this clip (preserved after the jump). However, instead of shouting out his adoration for a CW starlet, the exercise guru makes an impassioned plea for...physical education. Head in hands, Simmons' long-suffering publicist put in a reassuring call to Blake Lively ("The plan is still on — I swear!") and booked a romantic do-over on the next episode of Tyra. [CBS]

Oh, how I love Richard Simmons. If I ever met him, I'd probably cry tears of joy. A hug from Richard would probably melt the icy reserves that reside in my heart...
Nothing will top the time Dave made his steamer catch fire: priceless.
Richard was on Capitol Hill a few weeks ago lobbying for physical education in public schools. It's an important issue. Illinois is the only state that requires PE. While I hated this in middle school, I see the benefits as an adult.

@NoWireHangers: met AND worked out with the great simmons when he visited ithaca my sophomore year. everyone dressed up in 80s workout gear. it was kind of mocking and celebrating him at the same time. he talked about how overweight and elderly people are the two most marginalized groups in our country. then we worked our asses off for two hours.
yeah, you should be jealous.

Someone pointed out to me the difficulty of jumping up onto a couch BACKWARD, as Tom Cruise did, and suggested that Cruise must have rehearsed that stunt carefully in advance, while trying to make it look spontaneous.
Richard Simmons, however, is far more credible. He's actually quite adorable.

@NoWireHangers: Being a former Illinoisianer, I can say that the lessons I learned playing floor hockey have stayed with me my entire life.

Compulsory PE taught me the value of making fun of people when they're naked. This has really helped me climb the ladder of success here at Defamer.

with that suit, Richard would make a mighty fine preacher. however, he already shows Jim Jones behavior and mixing that with religion is a big no-no.

@WGARefugee: This one time, in PE, our teacher forced us to take off our clothes. We didn't usually take off our clothes when we showered, we just kind of leaned forward to shower our hair whilst wearing a towel around the waist. Don't ask why, it's different culture from yours in my country. Anyway, he thought it was ridiculous and ordered us to strip and shower in the "proper" way. So we did and tried desperately to cover our penises so anyone wouldn't see them.
Good times.
