The Sisterhood Of The Travelling Career Paths
Posted by Molly Friedman at 6:20 AM on July 30, 2008
Only three years ago, Blake Lively was just That Blonde Girl from The Sisterhood Of The Travelling Pants, and America Ferrera was just the Token Dorky Sidekick. Alexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn, on the other hand, were bonafide TV stars. My, how things have changed. With the film's sequel debuting next month, we take a look at how each of the leading ladies has done career-wise since the original racked up nearly $40MM at the box office in 2005. While there's a bit of bad news for the original's biggest stars, there's an alternate way of looking at this role reversal: any actress' status as the perennial "buddy" can obviously change with one little show that could.
Blake Lively/Bridget: With only one credit behind her before the first Pants, 1998's Sandman, Lively got her big break as Bridget the jock. Even though no one knew who she was at the time, she built her buzz by appearing in a few cheesy movies like the Justin Long vehicle Accepted. But now, thanks to Gossip Girl and its sultry appeal (ratings be damned!), Lively is arguably the boldest name on the sequel's marquee.
America Ferrera/Carmen: Cast as the not-so-pretty one who most magically fit into the same jans all four girls kept handing off, America is obviously the biggest success story when it comes to acting cred (an Emmy), ratings (Ugly Betty), and general public appeal (we don't even want to think about counting how many magazine covers with the hed "America The Beautiful!" she's appeared on in the last two years).
Amber Tamblyn/Tibby: Having blown away TV critics as the lead in Joan of Arcadia the same year Pants came out (and racking up Golden Globe and Emmy noms along the way), Tamblyn was a shiny bright new fixture on the circuit. But the only notable film Tamblyn has appeared in since? The Grudge 2. Oops. The only reason we can think of for Amber's dimming star? Michelle Trachtenberg. Sort of the more telegenic, tabloid-friendly version of Tamblyn, with all sorts of Pete Wentz/Ashlee Simpson sloppiness to keep the kids entertained.
Alexis Bledel/Lena: Pants came out at the height of Gilmore Girls' gooey success, just before new writers took over and turned the show into an even faster-paced linguistic mess of confusion. And Bledel was the biggest draw among all four, cast as the "pretty" one with the heftiest romantic plotline and most cinematic backdrop (finding love in Greece). But the only upcoming flick on Bledel's radar at the moment — aside from Pants 2 — is a comedy with Michael Keaton (which would've been a great gig in the late 80s, but today? Not so much). And the last time we saw her out and about was at the 2006 fashion shows alongside then-boyfriend Milo Ventimiglia — while Milo's struck gold in Heroes, Alexis has yet to find a similarly cozy rebound gig.

What the bleep has Michelle Trachtenberg have to do with your wrong opinion that Amber Tamblyn's career is not doing well other than the people who collaborate on this rag don't like either one. Michelle has 2-3 movies coming out next year and Amber has the Sisterhood 2 movie coming out and is in several indie films.
Try doing some research next time.
At least try to put a few facts in your columns.

Yes, you're beginning to glimpse the pattern - everything is Michelle Trachtenberg's fault. Everything!

Actually, I think Tamblyn looks thinner too. Although it's a little hard to tell in that kiwi a la Carole King frock. Bledel looks the same, and Blake looks... much more lively.
Oh, to be a young girl again. Telling stories, swapping pants and switching agents.

Interesting to note how AF lost weight (all over) while the rest looked to have gained (esp. Blake's chest).
This is not a sexist boy comment, either- just an observation. They all look great.

None of this explains how all of those girls can fit into the same pair of pants.
And now that they're all grown up, Blake seems eager to show that they could never all share the same bra, either.

@whitekidinflatbush: If what I've heard squares correctly, neither was exactly thrilled about having to fulfill contractual obligations for a sequel.

Neither Gossip Girl nor Heroes is exactly burning up the charts, ratings-wise. At least the former has some buzz. In 2 years, people will be like, "Blake who?"
God bless her, Amber Tamblyn seems happy writing poetry. Too bad for Alexis that Sin City 2 will take until the 12th of Never to happen.
Give Ferrera credit for dipping her toe into the producing waters, she'll always have something to fall back on.

Wasn't it because of the successful TV careers of Lively and Ferrera that the sequel got a green light? Before Ugly Betty became such a big hit, I don't thinka anyone was considering about holding these girls to the sequel clause in their contracts.
And yes, I saw the original in the theater, with three girls, and we were all a different character. I was Tibby because we both had shitty jobs for megacorporations.

The problem with Alexis is that, though I love her, she can't act, not even by LA standards. Amy Sherman-Palladino was her only saving grace.
Lauren Graham, on the other hand, should have a bigger career.

Do all stars use the same surgeon out there? (rhetorical) They're starting to look like clones.
Too bad for Ms. Lively; she was darling in the original.

Yes, Lively had her honker remade. Nice job they did. I'm wondering about the suddenly squared-off chin as well.

From the rumors that were flying around Gilmore Girls in the last season, Alexis Bledel didn't want to continue acting. She could have signed on for another year of GG but wanted to get into directing, and she seems to have followed through on the not acting, until now.
@Victor Ward: Lauren Graham is exceptional and I just don't understand why she doesn't have a bigger career!
