Darren Aronofsky Front-Runner to Direct 'RoboCop' Sequel/Remake Nobody Wants
Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 3:20 AM on July 18, 2008
Call us skeptics, cynics, whatever, but we're far more interested in the rumours circling MGM's RoboCop reboot than anything in the film itself. A few weeks ago we checked out whispers that director Darren Aronofsky was at the top of the short list to helm the film, which has a 2010 release date; his reps denied it ("But Darren's flattered!" we were assured), but alas, the chatter persists, with yet another report circulating this week that the studio is close to signing Aronofsky for the project — which, as if it's any consolation, is reportedly a sequel, not an updating.
But at least we have some more local laying-waste to look forward to, as opposed to, you know, Detroit:
Here's the logline: Present day Los Angeles, 20 years afterthe termination of the RoboCop program, the city decides to reinstate the program. If this all happens, I'd love to introduce Aronofsky to The Dark Knight, where he can see how to do it right...
Of course, Aronofsky was the one Warners passed over in favour of Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, leaving Aronofsky the indistinct pleasure of watching the studio dump his messy, misbegotten The Fountain in the general vicinity of the multiplex in late 2006. The filmmaker needs a boost as much as MGM itself; he's a risk, but one worth taking if they must overhaul the franchise. We figure Justin Theroux will be on the hook for a screenplay draft by the end of August.

Oh good, we'll have a dozen scenes of Robocop passed out on his tenement floor in a haze of painkillers, smack and existential angst.

Oh Darren. No, no, no. Look, I can overlook certain parts of The Fountain, but...
On the brightside, if they give him a small enough budget, he can do it indie-style and we can expect an ED-209 built out of a shopvac, an Apple IIc, and a Texas Instruments graphing calculator.

How can they re-imagine Robocop, when the greatest thing imaginable in the history of all creative ideas ever conceived was already presented in Robocop 3: Robotic ninjas!?!?!

Ah, I type too fast. A sequel? Only if it picks up from where "Robocop 2" left off, please.

Wow is this one project we don't need or what? Anytime there's a "re-imagining" of a movie, I see it as a "let's do it again and get it right this time." Something "Robocop" certainly does not need as it's satirical perfection, and, might I add, still holds up beautifully in technical terms.
I simply can't re-imagine it any better than it already is.

I'd buy that for a dollar!
Really that's all I'd be willing to spend to view another Robocop sequel.

@Ernst Stavro Blofeld: I wish just once during the run of That 70s Show we got to hear Red deliver that line.

Yay, Blofeld's back! (And he's quoting Kurtwood Smith.)
I wonder if the trailer will feature that "Requiem for a Dream" music which has been used in every trailer in the last seven years.

The original Verhoeven film is a modern classic, full of witty media satire, great performances (Kurtwood Smith is brilliant) and outrageous ultra-violence. This is as bad as remaking Bad Lieutenant (yes, it is).

@Juancho: Don't forget Iron Man's old costume and a cameo by Samuel L. Jackson thrown in for good measure.

@jerebo: somewhere on a tropical isle, Clint Mansell is having a Mai Tai and toasting to that.

I guess Aronofsky figures hey, what the fuck, he bagged Rachel Weisz, so what's the point in trying anymore.
I could've cared less about his Dark Knight, but I was with you on The Fountain, man, regardless of its flaws. But now you're just disappointing me.

With the new popularity of movie musicals, I propose that the latest incarnation should be a combination of the classic movie and a TV classic that died too soon: "Robocop Rock."
