The Smokey Bunch: Young Hollywood Just Can't Quit Cigs
Posted by Molly Friedman at 6:15 AM on June 26, 2008
Loose-lipped Jack Black has recently decided to abandon his pre-married man habits like staying up too late with "beer" and "dudes," but by far the most impressive habit Black claims to have kicked is smoking. Though we don't really immediately picture a carton of cigarettes when thinking of the Brangelina baby blabber, there are more than a few stars who we see smoking so often we automatically reach for a cancer stick whenever we see them on-screen. So who are the smokiest chimneys in Hollywood these days? We put together a list of the newbies and their predecessors, all of whom we feel should be notified that Joshua Kelley, no matter what Heigl has told them, is not, in fact, an ashtray:

Though Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper may have dropped LSD together and smoked a reported 155 joints in a row for just one Easy Rider scene, pictures of the legends puffing on cigars still pop up on the internets to this day. Along with Keith Richards, who continued to prove his immortality by walking this year's Shine A Light red carpet in NY with an ever-present cigarette, Hollywood's most infamous chimneys have been replaced by even heavier habit-afflicted youngsters. Mary-Kate Olsen is so addicted to her Marlboro Reds that she regularly lights up in gala bathrooms, while Shia LaBeouf recently set off security alarms at the Smithsonian in between shooting scenes for Transformers 2 because the bitch-slapper lit up in the john. And we're all well aware that chain-smoker Sam Ronson appears to have gotten lesbionic BFF Lindsay Lohan hooked — though all the straight edge forces within not-so-straight bestie T.R. Knight still haven't done much to come between Heigl and her American Spirits. Which is actually fine with us — the "throatier" her laugh, the weaker her chances of becoming the next Julia Roberts become!

Well, obviously it's not because of peer, or at least social, pressure. . .

@Juancho: Does that apply to just people in Hollywood? because in my country, I see some beer guzzling fat men and women who can't seem to go without a cig for a minute. And the slim ones who smoke look healthy enough to feed 20 people for about a month if push comes to shove.

Everybody in Hollywood smokes because they all want to stay thin. Cogito ergo sum.

I can't put my hands on it this minute, but there's a very respected study that showed you'd have to be 150lbs overweight for being fat to be as unhealthy as smoking a pack a day.
But these are actors we're talking about here. Of course they smoke; they're all neurasthenic basketcases, Annie Hall without the sunlight.

Good thing it doesn't cause heart and lung disease, trigger cancerous cells, or prematurely age, dry-out, and wrinkle skin.

@Juancho: I thought they smoked because it looks hot. And is addictive. They work out ten hours a week to stay thin, or don't eat. Also, it's a great way to socialize now that you can't smoke inside places. Step outside and meet people.

You'd think that as environmentally conscious/aware Hollywood is, they'd be the first to chuck smoking.

The thing I really miss about smoking is the excuse to temporarily get away all of those non-smokers who were better than me.

The overly indulged child may resist growing up and try to return to that state of dependency through crying, acting helpless, demanding satisfaction, and being "needy."
Oral fixations are considered to contribute to over-eating, being overly talkative, smoking addictions, overindulging in sugar, chewing on straws, and even alcoholism (known as "oral dependent" qualities). Other symptoms include a sarcastic or "biting" personality (known as "oral sadistic" qualities).
Sound like any actors you know?!

Not one comment on "oral fixation?!" I, Dr. Freud, am both saddened and disappointed.

Hollywood is high school. And in high school all the "cool kids" smoked.

Yeah, and the "cool kids" were usually vicious, narcissistic idiots with no values or morals outside of attracting attention. Smoke'em if you got'em, I say, and live long and prosper...

I was with a group of younger guys just this week and one of them came up and asked me if I had stopped smoking. I told him I had - was about to tell him all about it...when he asked," Was it the patch - Zyban - or Stoppo-smoke..(I made that up)...or what ?"
I pulled my T-shirt down from my neck, showed him the start of the foot-long scar that begins just South of my adam's apple and said, "No - triple bypass. It was real easy to quit after that. The nurses wouldn't turn off the oxygen in the tent so I could light up."
