'I Spit on Your Grave' Remake Promises Even Motorboatier Disembowlements Than Before
Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 4:15 AM on June 5, 2008
On a day when feminism in Hollywood swings wildly between pure gender-pandering and impassioned scrotum-punching, we're hearing about one developing project that could potentially split the difference: I Spit on Your Grave, a remake of the notorious 1978 rape-revenge film that made so many friends upon its initial release ("Attending it was one of the most depressing experiences of my life," Roger Ebert wrote in his original review).
But despite revisionists who have since accorded political meaning to director Meir Zarchi's grotty castrations and disembowelments, the producers at CineTel Films are apparently sticking to the straight crapsploitation playbook:
As reviled as it was when originally released, I Spit on Your Grave was a precursor to a slew of female revenge film hits, [CineTel president Paul] Hertzberg said. Contemporary genre fare has become so graphically violent that the original doesn't seem as outrageous as it did 30 years ago. Hertzberg is listening to pitches from writers on how to ratchet up the shock factor.
"After seeing what was done with an R rating on films like Saw and Hostel, we think we can modernize this story, be competitive with what this marketplace expects and not have to aim for an NC-17 or X rating," Hertzberg said.
Good for them, but let's hope they get really creative; what is Michael Patrick King doing with that first-look deal at DreamWorks, anyway?

Seriously, what becomes of society as we become more and more inured to acts of violence? Are there any psychological studies on this (Besides Clockwork Orange?)

I am absolutely horrified by this development. I rented this movie 20 years ago thinking it would play into my young, feminist sensiblities; sisterhood and all that good crap and I'm not exaggerating when I say I had to fight the compulsion to vomit. Basically it's a rapist's dream come true with about 45 minutes of gang rape and 10 of revenge. I wonder how long it will take before the industry dips into the kiddie porn pool to make a buck. Seriously, I'm not a prude, sincerely comprehend the difference between fantasy and reality, artistic license, for the sake of the story, don't believe in censorship.....but this movie was/is nothing but garbage. Of course, I'm the only one I know in this town who thinks Bad Lieutenant was garbage too, so what do I know?

It'll probably end up looking like Irreversible only with crushed gonads instead of a crushed skull.

@The Cooler: The only problem is that after her character gets raped, brutalized, and generally FUBAR, she comes back and takes out the guys that did it. Who the hell wants to see LiLo as the winner? Here's an idea, though: make it 2 women, Linds and some other actress, maybe one who the general public can actually stand, have Linds's character get taken out (a la Paris Hilton in House of Wax, the ONLY redeeming feature of that mess) and have the other girl go medieval on the bad guys asses.

For every nut-punching or Saw / Hostel-like scene featured on Defamer, we'd better god-damned have a scene of TWO GUYS KISSING.
That is all.

I too, saw it 20 years ago, and I still have nightmares about it. It's so horrifying, graphic, exploitative, and disturbing . . . and not in a good way.
After a particular incident in the gang rape sequence, I turned it off and felt a bit of my innocence fade.

They should have a separate writers guild for people who write this kind of stuff. Call it the Splatter Guild of America or something. Eric Red could be the president.

Eric Red's actually written some very good horror films. I just wouldn't trust him with my car keys.

@jerebo: Now there's a good idea for a horror film. Call it "Designated Driver."

I agree. This disgusts me. Like the current backlash against feminism isn't enough. There is no way I would even see the original after reading Ebert's review, and I am horrified that they think they should do it again, but with more violence. I think all rape/revenge films are pretty pointless trash, and I don't know what "female revenge film hits" these producers are speaking of. Did I Spit on Your Grave inspire First Wives Club?
