Grim Reports Have Paul Newman Diagnosed with Terminal Lung Cancer
Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 11:40 PM on June 10, 2008
We knew Paul Newman was ailing when he retired from acting last year, but the diagnosis only trickled out in the last day or so in reports suggesting the 83-year-old Oscar-winner (and former chain smoker) is suffering from terminal lung cancer. The Dish Rag picked up the story last night at the LA Times:
The acclaimed actor is said to have been diagnosed at New York's Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, where he is currently receiving outpatient treatment and is under a leading New York oncologist's care. One of the few to know about Newman's illness is his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid costar and good pal, Robert Redford.
Meanwhile, neither the hospital nor Newman's rep has confirmed the reports. We'll hope for the best, shoot a round of 9-ball at lunch in his honour, and pass more word along as it comes in.

This is the worst part of getting older. You realize that they really DON'T make 'em like they used to. This sucks beyond the telling.

You win this round cancer, but science will win the war. Nobody lays a hand on Paul Newman and gets away with it.

The 40th anniversary of 1968 has its own bizarre damage report - the potential fall of towering icons of the 60's by natural causes.

Sad, indeed. I won't try to top anybody's graceful words so far but here's a cool Newman anecdote.
A friend of my mom's was in an ice cream shop in Connecticut several years ago. She pays for her cone, turns, and sees guess who. He was gracious, signed an autograph and was pretty much everything you'd hope/expect Paul Newman to be.
As she got in her car, he came out and tapped on the window. She rolled it down and he gently said, "Excuse me, but I think you put your ice cream in your purse."
Be well, Fast Eddie.

Well hell, if that isn't the worse news ever.
Hollywood just can't make icons anymore. Newman, Eastwood: who in the last 20 years has even come close to those guys?

Newman's a tough old bird. I have faith that he will fight this with everything he's got.
Anyone who's done this much good has some seriously awesome karma in his corner.

"Terminal lung cancer" in an 83-year-old man, smoker or non-smoker, is not such a shocker. Everyone remembers Paul Newman from his glory days, which were decades ago. We don't realize these people are getting old. Eighty three is a very long life, and all we can hope for is that he lives out his remaining days in comfort.

A few years ago, one of my friends waited on Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward at an upscale sporting goods store. The manager offered to close the store for them, but he refused. He and his wife were gracious to everyone who appraoched them. My friend tried to offer him a "VIP discount" and he turned it down, saying "Sweetie, I'm rich."

@Dave J.: I attribute it to the fact that people really don't want icons anymore. They want to bring celebrities down to a they're-just-as messed-up-as-we- are level. You can see it in the glee of a zillion internet bloggers whenever a celebrity makes a fool of his/herself.
Sad about the news. I don't think it's a bad thing that younger people probably only know him as the guy on jars of tomato sauce and cartons of lemonade. If they realize his charitable inclinations behind all that, I think that is acclaim enough. He's a good man.

This sucks. Paul is the last of the really great movie stars and a charitable guy who puts his money where his mouth is. I so hope this is not true, but I have a sinking suspicion it is.

I'm a realist. As much as I have unabashed heterosexual man-love for Paul Newman, the realist says this has to happen sometime.
That said, I was hoping it wouldn't be for another 40 or 50 years. And that said, it would be wonderful if this was a rumour.
Truly, a role model.

He's one of the Last of the Class Acts, and no mistake. So much to admire, from the body of cinematic work and philanthropy, to that enduring marriage to the exquisite Ms. Woodward.
83 years may indeed represent a ripe old age, but it's still life to the one who's living. Godspeed, Mr. Newman--no matter what your condition may actually be.
