According To Miss Universe Australia, Our National Costume Is... Um...

Australian Post Posted by Clem Bastow at 10:00 AM on June 18, 2008

If there's one tenuous reason left to watch outdated beauty pageants like Miss Universe, it has to be the "National Costume" section, where the contestants parade out in batshit crazy formal/drag queen versions of, say, a dirndl or Canadian Mounties' uniform.

So you can imagine my disappointment - and Ken Done's! - when this year's Miss Universe Australia hopeful and Alessandra Ambrosio lookalike Laura Dundovic revealed her Jayson Brundson-designed National Costume outfit, and, er, well, here it is:

National WTF.jpg

So... Our national costume is a toilet roll dolly? A cuttlefish? Fish'n'chips in a rolled up newspaper?? As Ken Done says in the story:

"He has created something beautiful but I don't think a gown is what is meant as national costume,'' said Mr Done. "A gown could be seen as something from London or Moscow.

"With more than 80 per cent of Australians living on the part of Australia the national dress should reflect beach culture.''

He has a point, and we've come up with some corker Lifesaver-inspired numbers at previous pageants. She could even come as a Wilderness Society koala!

What do YOU think Brundson's 'National Costume' is inspired by? Please feel free to enlighten us, and Ken Done. Stop the madness!

hmmm... i think a t-shirt with an outline of Australia that states "insert culture here" would make a great national costume. What do you think?

Or a T-shirt that states "Look at Moi".. either way im happy.

i think it's meant to be coral. the shape and colours are very Great Barrier Reef-like. i like it because it's elegant, but i guess it's not as obvious as something like a kimono or a dirndl.

I think it's the Arts Centre in Melbourne. Her head is the spire. I like it.

I tried really hard to link this dress to anything iconically Australian...

Then a brainwave! The rolls of taffeta (or whatever the hell it is) represent the waves of Bondi rolling in.

There's even a roll of black for Campbell Parade. Brilliant!

This year, we had to make about 100 giant tissue paper flowers for my daughter's dance team. Now I know where the spares went. You have to imagine holding her head as the stem, with the legs sticking up kaas the stamens.
