Having now spent two consecutive summers curled up inside frigid multiplex screening rooms with champion switchblade-twirler Shia LaBeouf, it was really starting to feel as if the hot young actor was becoming part of the family. Which made it all the harder to watch a leaked video of LaBeouf partaking in a very real round of Five-Fingered Mexican Roulette—an extreme subgenre of backyard fighting banned in 50 states, five territories, and several Maritime provinces—in which he was heard to drunkenly goad his bromantic sparring partner with a dropping of the dreaded rainbow F-bomb. "The videotape that is currently being circulated is several years old and captures Shia playing a game among friends in which he uses a derogatory word toward a friend," LaBeouf's rep tells me exclusively.
"He regrets having used the word in any capacity and is very embarrassed that this footage is being seen by anyone."
While we appreciate the sentiment, we suspect GLAAD won't be fully satisfied until the young male role model tapes a public service announcement underscoring the ability of ugly words to inflict a pain as severe as "what my Indiana Jones character Mutt Williams felt as he was thwacked numerous times in the genitals by a variety of barbed, bulbous jungle plants."

@ Cam/ron: Huuuuge difference between a teenage boy getting drunk in the basement with some friends and an out of control celeb that should be on a suicide watch list.

Didn't Shia say in a recent interview that he had dropped some long-term friends because of changes in their attitudes towards each other? The posting of this video sounds like one or more of those dropped-like-a-hot-potato former friends was pissed off and decided on some revenge (and on Shia's birthday, no less).

@TurdBlossom: "Caught" implies he did something wrong. You should be able to call whomever you want whatever you want in the privacy of your own home. I think there's an Amendment regarding this in our Constitution.
What should be apologized for is the leak of the private tape and people's outrage at such a non-incident.

@CourageousCoward: I'm all for free speech, but if you're going to employ demeaning slurs and epithets as part of said speech, then you need to be prepared to reap the whirlwind if a video of you using them is released to the public.

Ohe has to hope that future apologies will not be due to the stockholders of major studios if Shia's furute behavior does not improve and jeapordizes projects that he is involve in.
@TryThisAtHome:I think that the phrase "several years" is publicist-speak. In the video, Shia looks as he did around the time of the release of Disturbia, so I would guess that it's probably just over a year old.

@CourageousCoward: While I agree that getting upset about this is retarded (am I allowed to use that word? I don't know...), there is a difference between what a person 'should be able' to do and what it is actually right to do. Freedom of expression is not so much a moral license as it is a prohibition against enforcing majority values and controlling individuals. It's intended to give people the freedom to do the wrong thing.
Sorry to nitpick, but as a one time moral philosophy major I get bent out of shape by the misappropriation of rights theory.

Has anyone in this thread defending the word "faggot" ever been called a "faggot" by a "non-faggot" in front of a classroom of snickering other "non-faggots" who knew that you were, in actuality, a "faggot?" If so, I doubt you'd find the word quite so hip, harmless, and awesome.

I really don't understand how people can be held responsible for shit like this... it's a leaked video of him a few years ago on YouTube, not a nationwide press-release stating his opinions. Of course... it's a fine line these days.

@Seth: Yeah, but the point is precisely that we haven't. It's context that gives words meaning. In that context it's terrible because it is intended to degrade, humiliate and bully someone for their sexual orientation. In Shia's context it's a kid goofing around with one of his friends. Words don't have intrinsic power. It's how you use them that matters.
