Rumer Willis Works Hard To Emulate Demi Moore, But Do Extensions And Bikini Bodies A Superstar Make?
Posted by Molly Friedman at 9:10 AM on May 1, 2008
It took her long enough, but the eldest spawn of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore is finally putting her pedigree to good use. Rumer Willis reminded the world of her burgeoning acting career at last week's premiere of From Within, the horror flick she's starring in, and was spotted posing for her first ad campaign for Wal-Mart's newest surfer fashion brand OP (formerly Ocean Pacific). And while the extensions she wore for the premiere coupled with the bikini body she displayed alongside Pete Wentz for the photo shoot do admittedly evoke memories of a younger version of her iconic mum, are Rumer's recent career choices really going to jumpstart a Demi-like fame trajectory? Or will she soon be on MTV's third season of Rock The Cradle?

While Wal-Mart isn't nearly as highbrow as Versace, the fashion brand Demi modelled for in 2005, Moore was actually a hard-working model aching for a big break at 18. Rumer, now 19, is hardly struggling, and Wal-Mart, as Hilary Duff and the Olsen sisters know fully well, bring in major bucks.

And landing the role in From Within may not win Rumer any Oscar nods, but Moore didn't really break out until landing a recurring role on General Hospital at 20. So despite cheesy ad campaigns and teen romp scary movies serving as the first credits on her resume, Rumer may surprise us all and manage to live up to her mother's decades-long star status. Fingers crossed she doesn't take on any implant-requiring lap dance roles for the time being, though. Lindsay Lohan may be the only ticket-buyer.

Kudos, for her for trying to make it work. She does seem to be taking her fame-whoring seriously, but until I see some acting chops, or a talent for anything besides vamping on the red carpet, I'm not buying it.
Unrelated, Demi used to suck so hard on General Hospital back in the day.

Well she's been named one of People's most beautiful stars, so she's got a good publicist too.

As long as she keeps away from Li-Lo and Paris (everyone that girl gets involved with implodes) she should be fine.

@pumpkinsoup: Demi may not have been the strongest actor on GH, but you did notice her and we still remember, plus the storylines around that time were pretty weak. I mean, a "fake" Laura (until the real Laura agreed to return) and the idea of a floating casino in a New York harbor?

I'm sorry, but that's a lot of jaw, folks.

I occasionally repeat (like a mantra) that Rumer is "unconventionally pretty," but I gotta tell ya...sometimes it's a hard-sell, even to myself.
I mean, kids often get a more cohesive "spread" of their parents' looks, but this girl has literally inherited her mother's head from the nose-up and her father's head from the nose-down. It's like the whole thing is mercilessly divided by some cruelly delineated equatorial line.
She can't do anything about that kind of face, short of a horde of plastic surgeons armed with sledgehammers, anvils, and perhaps a basket-loader or two.
So, I aver that she is indeed "uncoventionally pretty," champion her efforts, and urge her to build an altar in her home to Angelica Huston. Therein lies her career hope, and it is decidedly not a Demi-style hope.
Bless her head.

Magister! You remember plot lines! All my GH memories are so smudged. Demi was there, and John Stamos, and at some point there was like a crystal that gangsters were going to freeze the world with, or something.
I notice in this pic of Rumer her nose is too small for her face. Seriously, her jaw would look much more proportional if her nose were more substantial.

@Magister: Sorry, I don't buy it. I remember Demi Moore's pitiful performance because she went on to become, you know, Demi Moore, not because of any skill or flair she imparted onto her role. I remember her leaving GH and popping up in 'Blame it on Rio' a year later, and we were all, "Dude, is that... Laura Palmer's sister? She sucked." Next thing you know she was in that annoying St. Elmo's movie and Robert Scorpio was trying to save Port Charles with his own hands.

There is no way this girl can evoke memories of her mom.
Demi is at least pretty to look at. Rumer is more like, you just stare at her, trying to figure out how to fix the shape of her head.
I don't think she could ever act well enough to get me to overlook her appearance.

@pumpkinsoup: @Magister: @MissHathaway: Why are you all admitting to being old enough to remember this? This is a Hollywood blog. Jesus. You don't see me talking about how shocked I was when Scotty ruined the wedding... shit!

@MissHathaway: Ah!Stamos! I still refer to the time that he had teenaged sex with the girl he was dating as some kind of pivotal moment in daytime history.
@pumpkinsoup: I don't know. I can actually picture a couple of scenes with Demi, but I probably couldn't pick Laura Palmer out of a line-up. There was just some kind of chaotic energy to her performance. Though, of course she was often playing against Emma Samms, so some of it may be in the comparisons.

As for Demi's kid: I have to say that she seems to photograph well, when she is posed, but some of the more candid shots over the years have made me wonder.

PS) I watched the finale of the "Laura Palmer" show in the garishly-painted lounge at "Fred Flintstone Village", but that's a whole other story.

@OldTowneTavern: I thought that name sounded familiar. I just mostly remember the "fake" Laura, whom the Cassadine's had brainwashed to think she was "real" until Genie Francis agreed to reprise her role.
(Yikes! I watched GH for far too long, but thankfully, I basically fell out of the habit in the months after 9/11 and now, I only see it maybe once a month)

@OldTowneTavern: I think that's around when I stopped watching too. I haven't watched it in years. Oh, did I have a thing for Robert Scorpio back then.
Okay, since I also made the Laura Palmer gaffe, I had to look up her last name. It's Spencer.
Is it telling of poor Rumer's star quality that her post got completely hijacked by General Hospital fans?@OldTowneTavern:

Actually, I gave up on GH back when Ana was held captive for what seemed like years by some guy in the woods, when despite being a former spy, the best she could do was stab him in the hand. Even in those days before Xena, Buffy, and Starbuck I was deeply ashamed to have watched such a candyass heroine.

Robert Scorpio fan here! What does he look like now?
I understand Rumer. I was the fugly child of gorgeous parents. But I'm not jumping in front of a camera every two seconds like she is.

HEY!!!
Hundreds of careers have been made off of "bikini bodies" and "extensions"...

A bikini body and extensions is standard these days in a superstar wannabes kit bag, like cocaine and Red Bull, your publicist's ph no on speed dial 24/7, 'accidental' paparazzi intimate shots (exposed body parts optional) and a trophy bf/gf/posing buddy.
Here, Rumer has chosen a surf board for her posing buddy mirroring Cameron Diaz.

@OldTowneTavern & @pumpkinsoup: For me, it was when they spent the better part of a year building up to a "nerve gas" storyline, then suddenly they dropped it and started focusing exclusively on family and standard soap opera fare.
