Divorce Filing Contains All The Stuff You'd Rather Not Know About Bill Murray
Posted by Seth at 3:45 AM on May 30, 2008
There really is no pleasant way to spin a story in which one the great American comedy icons is accused in a court filing of chronic infidelity and physical abuse (save your comments—Charlie Sheen is far from an American comedy icon), so we'll leave it to The Smoking Gun to fill you in on the ugly details of the Bill and Jennifer Murray divorce:
Bill Murray is a drug-addicted spousal abuser and serial adulterer who has abandoned his family, according to a scathing divorce filing by his estranged wife.
Jennifer Murray alleges that the Academy Award-nominated actor's "adultery, addiction to marijuana and alcohol, abusive behaviour, physical abuse, sexual addictions and frequent abandonment" led her in 2006 to move into a separate South Carolina home with the couple's four children. [...]Murray contends that the comedian physically abused her on several occasions during their marriage (they were wed in 1997) and that the star hit her in the face during a November 2007 confrontation in her home. During that incident, the May 12 complaint alleges, the 57-year-old performer "told her she was 'lucky he didn't kill her.'"
Certainly, Murray is preceded by a reputation for not always being entirely a joy to be around: Even Scarlett Johansson, who includes him among the "five dads" who taught her everything she knows about how to best employ the Electra complex to one's career advantage, admits that he was perhaps the scariest of all her set-daddies. By the same token, the idiosyncratic actor's behaviour has grown even more erratic of late, as manifested by a regrettable international incident in which he mowed down several herring stands on the streets of Stockholm, drunkenly piloting a golf cart he briefly mistook for a mighty Viking vessel. We can only hope the ensuing legal proceedings won't grow even uglier, with yet further accusations of inappropriate conduct involving mentor-hungry co-stars and turf-friendly mobility devices.

@Sweet Panda Love: I think it's somehow related to the "Clown Correlary" which states that said clown's private life is indirectly proportionate to the laughs he brings on-screen.
So...For every, "Chicks dig me because I rarely wear underwear. And when I do, it's usually something special." a kitten dies. Or something like that.

I think the pre-ex lives in Charleston, not Bill. I think I've met your brother though. Is he responsible for the "Rainbow Row" house color scheme?
Billo, I believe, still spends a good deal of time in North San Diego County....

Oh, say it ain't so, Bill! I, among many, thought your post Jesper-Parnevik-party golf cart tour of Stockholm was simply charming.
Does this explain why we don't see you at the(Top Secret San Diego County Location) Little League games any more? The Baseball Mommies just thought your boys had gotten too old.
You can come anytime anyway; especially if you bring Tim Robbins, or anyone else cute and sorta famous. The BMs aren't picky.

I'll agree with you wholeheartedly.
"Freaks & Geeks" fans will remember the line (although it's supposed to make her seem like a bitch) from the scene of Sam and Cindy Sanders watching "The Jerk":
Sam: Do you want some popcorn?
Cindy: Will popcorn make this movie funnier?
Truer words. Truer words.
And Bill Murray. Waaaaaay overrated. Although "Quick Change" had its moments. But the real star of that movie is 1989 NYC.

Am I the only one here who doesn't find Bill Murray funny? I see him as a post-modern comic actor, like Steve Martin, who is always in ironic mode, satirizing comic conventions but never working without that reflexive safety net. He's not Lenny Bruce or Buster Keaton. He's not even Adam Carolla (who was really funny when he was improvising late at night on Loveline).

Whether the allegations are true or not, is it necessary to file this type of character assasination when petitioning for divorce? (honest question) I think here (in Canada) we have no-fault divorce and you just say it's over, get the paperwork done, move on. (ideally)
When a couple has children, why would either one of them choose to drag the other one's reputation through the mud. It reeks of vengence and bitterness, but worse, abject selfishness. No intention here to excuse or cover-up abuse, just wonder if these allegations of "past" behavior are pertinent or necessary when dissolving the marriage.

True BM story: While him and his wife were getting gas at a local station on route to the Hamptons a few years ago, he asked an attendant there not pumping his gas (who happened to be an acquaintance) where is the closest place to grab some grub. My friend "Joey" began explaining the way to the main road with a bunch of crap at it all the while eating his lunch of fries. Murray settled up, grabbed the fries out of my friend's hands and said "Look, its a lot closer than you think". Only in Hollywood could a pock marked asshole become a household name. And I would still schtoop him any day.

The major bullshit flag for me is that she didn't call the cops over any of this stuff. That's what you do when someone hits you in the face and insinuates that he'll kill you because of reefer rage or whatever. Alternateley, maybe he's just so funny and charming that it takes a couple of years of addled cruelty to finally split up with him.

@ThereMustBeAPony: Dragging someone's name through the mud implies that he didn't do anything that bad. If he did do as stated, it doesn't sound like "no fault". Also, I'm not sure, but even if you don't get official points for being the victim of these sort of actions, you do probably get sympathy points.

Oooooookay. I was writing out a comment then my computer freaked out on me. I'm worried it's just gonna pop up momentarily in which case there'll be double up and I'll look stupid. But whatever.
I'm kind of late to this Bill Murray thing. But I wanna say this: Bill Murray is kind of a hero of mine. But by all accounts he's a totally self destructive sonofabitch. He's a foul tempered, manic depressive who takes full responsibility for the failure of his previous marriage. He's also from what I understand very aware of his own failings, and has a good heart deep down. He's a troubled guy with a lot of problems, and it makes me very sad to hear about this latest development.
As for the rest of you guys...
@WGARefugee: You are crazy. Bill Murray not funny? ...We would never hang out.
@kityglitr: Seriously? Not a drug cos it's a plant? ...Go back to your bong hippie. Is heroin not a drug because it's made from poppy seeds? And yeah, pot addiction. There's a lot more to addiction than chemical dependency. Especially if you have a history of emotional problems.
@RaptorAvatar: Maybe she was attempting to save her marriage. Or to not involve the press. Dude, as far as I'm concerned false claims about domestic abuse are as bad as abuse itself, but you have no way of knowing whether she's telling the truth or not. I get weirded out when people call bullshit on this stuff without evidence. Imagine what that would be like to deal with if you were a victim.
