Kristen Wiig, MVP of SNL
Posted by Mark Graham at 10:50 AM on April 15, 2008
If you're wondering why you're not seeing as much of popular SNL featured players like Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader and Andy Samberg these days, there's one simple reason why: Kristen Wiig. Since she made her debut on the show back in late 2005, Wiig has quickly established herself as one of the most gifted and versatile performers to ever grace the stage at Studio 8H, not to mention one of the funniest. In this short time, she's quickly become Lorne Michaels' MVP of the show, often appearing in 4-5 sketches per episode. While it's debatable as to whether or not she'll ever reach breakout superstar status of SNL alums like Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy or Mike Myers, she is, for our money, the single most talented sketch comedian the show has seen since fellow Groundlings alum Will Ferrell retired. After the jump, we feature two sketches that she knocked out of the park this weekend. The first features a spot-on impression of Jamie Lee Curtis filming a commercial for Activia yogurt; the latter, a virtuoso turn as a haggard and worn down travel writer named Judy Grimes who, for the life of her, can't stop kidding around.

I'd like her more in the first sketch if she could stop looking at the cue cards.

Wiig is, hands down, the best performer on SNL right now...but I don't think either of the sketches you selected do her justice. Where's Penelope?

Yeah, I have to disagree with this one as well.
It's not that she's not good, but the Judy Grimes character was the same timing and rythm as Penelope, it didn't seem much of a stretch.
Maya Rudolph, she was the best to come along after Will. Still bummed she isn't back on the show..

She's hilarious, original and great. Just like all the female SNL standouts over the years she'll have a long and successful movie career...oh wait, never mind.

Wow, I'm shaking my head. She's one of least funny females the show has had. Every one of her characters does the exact same thing. Although I will admit the Jamie Lee Curtis sketch made me laugh, but not because she was so dead on the character.

Let's face it, the women in general have carried this show for some time now. Before Wiig, there was the aforementioned Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. I would even count the oft-ignored tandem of Shannon, Oteri and Gasteyer in that mix. And do I even have to bring up Gilda?

Amen. I think Kristin Wiig is fantastic.

The first time that I noticed her was the first time her "Target" lady appeared and I'm glad that she moved up to being a full cast member this season.
With that said, if you were to ask me to imagine a possible career trajectory or compare her to any former cast member, I'd have to say Jane Curtin. I'm sure someday, if Ms. Wiig keeps her wits about her, she'll find a "Kate" to go with her "Allie" or a "Third Rock" to keep her in residuals for the rest of her life.

@Imnotatnbc: I'm on the "every character she does is the same" boat as well, at least from what I've seen of SNL lately, which is roughly one episode.
Can't we all just agree that the "Digital Short" is the only thing remotely worth watching these days? At least beyond the extremely-quotable-but-bizarrely-awful Walken "Googly Eyes on Plants" Sketch.

Kristen Wiig is all kinds of brilliant and I'm thrilled to see her getting the attention that's usually reserved for male SNL alums. There is nothing she can't do--every skit I've ever seen her in, she's been freaking amazing.

She is really tremendous. Some of her characters have similar attributes, since, you know, they are all played by the same human being. But there is a lot of diversity in what she can do, and she simply cracks me up.
Also, are people on here criticizing comedy and saying shit like "can I get the last 5 minutes of my life back, please?"?
Christ.

Yup. She's fantastic, and I have to hand it to SNL -- the Activia sketch and the fake commercial they did a few weeks ago for Annuale, the pill that lets you have your period just once a year, both had me literally in hysterics. Penelope was a cute idea, once or twice, but eh. Frankly, Kristen's got a lot more talent than Amy Poehler and is a better actress than Tina Fey.
Why the hating on her so much? Although I agree with Wookie that Jason Sudeikis is great, it's more that I find him unbelievably attractive and charming, not necessarily laugh out loud hilarious.

Wiig is great. The show is God awful in general. The performers are talented and the writing is terrible. Each sketch could go many, many places, but always ends up with poop. They just aim for the easy (poop) joke.

Wiig is amazing - I continue to be blown away by her talent, though it's often tempered by the show's writing.
I have no idea how "Judy Grimes" was written, but she knocks it out of the park.

Wiig certainly captured the more irritating parts of Jamie Lee Curtis's, well, everything. Wiig's great anyway, liked her right off...

Wiig Rules.
My favorite is "Balloon Rides"
I despise that "can I get the last X minutes back..." cliche with the power of 1000 suns.

I don't know what it is, but I feel like if this woman looked at me twice on the same day, I would drop whatever I was doing and ask her to marry me.
I mean, once I ruled Scarlett completely out (whom Kristen does even kind of resemble, sometimes....)

I'll see your Sudeikis (who does rule as well), and raise you their GENIUS "Two Assholes..." sketch.
"Babe, you want a smoothie, babe?"
"...you look like a rabbit."
