Defamer Australia At 'Guys & Dolls' Opening Night

Here at Defamer Australia we like nothing more than reliving our rapidly fading memories of high school musical stardom getting a bit of culture, so we were happy to accompany a Defamer Australia pal to the opening night of the Melbourne season of Guys & Dolls. Yes, the 1950 musical that is quickly becoming as dated as Bye, Bye Birdie and should probably be banished to the am-dram circuit is back, again, for no reason - really - other than an impressive bit of Australian musical theatre stunt casting: to wit, enough leading ladies to stun an ox! Magda Szubanski in drag! (Disturbing!) Lisa McCune's Boston-Irish accent amongst sticking out like a sore thumb amongst the Bronx drawls of '40s New York! Not much else!
However, Defamer Australia being the way we are, we were there as much to resist singing along to Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat as we were to assess the guest list - which we did, and how!
Read on for this round of red carpet "celebrity" spotto!
- Livinia Nixon looking like an escapee from Del Boca Vista in a sensible mid-calf sequinned dress, pink pashmina (perfect for a nice nap in the corner) and shoes last spotted in the Kumfs catalogue left on the coffee table in a retirement village! And they wonder why she was turfed from being the face of glamorous "Me!bourne"...
- Marina Prior's suspiciously pert bosom!
- Derryn Hinch!
- Pete Smith!
- Defamer Australia taking a moment to scan the room, spotting a rather handsome older gentleman, thinking, "Mmm he's a bit of a silver fox OH FUCK IT'S NEIL MITCHELL UNCLEAN UNCLEAN"!
- Geoffrey Rush!
- Miranda Otto (with hubby Peter O'Brien), looking - we thought - pleased to be as far away from Cashmere Mafia as possible. But maybe that's just us!
- Lisa McCune and ex-costar Martin Sacks being photographed together looking a bit "Dudes, we haven't been together on screen for about a million years, and we hate to break it to you, but we actually don't love each other"!
- RHONDA BURCHMORE!
- Patti and Lauren Newton having a "girl's night out" with neither Bert nor Matt Welsh! Maybe they "indulged" with some Tim Tams and a face mask after the show!
- More or less the entire cast of Neighbours from the last 12 years!
- A rather plastic-looking "glamour" in a very "sexy" dress approached Defamer Australia's table at the after party, arm in arm with an anonymous suit, and we thought she looked familiar until our pal exclaimed, "OH MY GOD GAINSVILLE!!"
At that point we put down our bucks fizzes and made our way towards the taxi rank.

Clem, you thought Lisa's accent was a bit dodgy - how about Marina's occasional ventures into a Russian dialect when she was working the Bronx angle? (And don't get me started on whatever the hell Magda was doing - she was kinda the weak link.) Must say, though - those dance numbers from Ms Prior and the Hot Box gals were sexier than I expected.
