BREAKING: Wesley Snipes Has Three Years In Prison to Prepare For Next Role
Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 9:30 AM on April 25, 2008
Word just over the transom at Defamer HQ notes that Wesley Snipes's tax-evasion hobby will cost him dearly — as in three years in federal prison. Not even character-boosting letters from Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson were enough in the end to save Snipes from his fate, which was saluted today by US attorney Robert O'Neill: "[Y]ou have to pay your taxes. ... To continually just say, 'I don't owe taxes, you must show me why I owe taxes,' it seemed his position was ludicrous."
Snipes was not required to surrender immediately; rather, he will begin his sentence at a later date after turning himself in closer to his home in New Jersey. Naturally, per Passenger 57, we're betting on black and predicting Snipes' prompt defection to Europe, where he and fellow expat fugitive Roman Polanski will eventually team up on Blade 4: IRSlayer.

Lesson learned is...celebs do your crimes in L.A. County, 'cause outside the thirty mile zone you.are.on.your.own.
Appalling that he's got 3 years in the clink for a victimless crime. It's not like he was driving the wrong way on the highway on-ramp or doing 360's in a high-speed chase. Noooo.

Wes, if you'd had just blown the D.A. like LiLo & Paris, you'd be out in hours.
Oh well, now you'll get 3 years of practice on your cellmate, for the next time you get arraigned.

It's cos he's black. Damn the man. Can he get out after 3 days like other (loosely-used term coming up) celebs? You know -- say he has claustrophobia or something? Have a heart!

Whatever happened to that guy that supposedly never payed his taxes and then won in court when the IRS tried to charge him because supposedly there is no law about paying taxes. Is that all one myth or are some people just better in court?

Everybody has to pay their taxes, he should too. He'll probably get out sooner though.

@kylo4: Hope so.
@In Other News...: Allow me to rephrase: "No potential for blood-splattering, fender-crunching, shattered-glass or mourning families of a victimless crime."
In my opinion, he should have used the "conscientious objector to the War in Iraq" defense. Everybody's taxes are paying for that.

@PaisleyPajamas: "Victimless crime." What a load of utter crap.

aah, lovehandles, lovehandles... One day I followed a link to a Politico post. I got through three comments and fled, grateful for every minute I waste reading the literate and intelligent posts at Gawker. And now I find a commenter here who suspects the IRS is an extralegal bureaucracy preying on citizens with bad lawyers; it's the citizens with bad accountants.

How cheap do you have to be... to make millions and not pay a piece of the bread in taxes.. Stop with the greed

I'm sorry, but Wesley is black. I'm a black man and I know that, Tiger and Barack notwithstanding, folks are just itching to see a many of us behind bars as possible. I'm not judging -- I'm just saying -- it's true. What the hell did he THINK they were going to do to him for not paying his taxes?
It'd be one thing if he were, say, a Kennedy and he'd just raped a girl then killed her with a golf club. Then he might have a shot at getting off. But this is America and he is a black dude. His black ass was jail bound from jump street.

@itsalwaysthequietones:
I certainly meant no offense to your sensibilities. I'm attempting comparison of Snipes' crime to the recent celebutards' crimes of operating vehicles under the influence.
I pay my taxes like everybody else. Snipes' should too. I'm just pointing out that the punishment seems counterproductive if the IRS really wants to get paid. I think he's been made an example, and I feel bad for him. Tall poppies, and all that.

The government has never closed the loophole that states that we are only obligated to pay taxes in a time of war (which in my opinion is why Wesley got screwed). They did, however, remove the tiny, barely readable box, under the signature line at the end of the form that said "I do not wish to pay taxes this year." Let me use this opportunity to say, I dislike the government immensely.

@Little Mintz Sunshine: Let's send Marcus to the big house too, dammit! (Ok, I was over the top with the shrill after rereading -- but my point was to deflate Snipes' hubris). You can't even claim stupidity - what could possibly have made him think he'd get off without doing the maximum?

@PaisleyPajamas: The IRS will still get paid. Jail time is not in lieu of his tax bill.
I also read that the government had asked for a $5 million fine, but the article doesn't indicate whether that was part of the sentence or not. With interest and penalties, Wesley's going to be doing voiceover work for South Korean commercials for a long time.

@LoveHandles: I thought originally his defense that he was that he (Snipes) according to the NYTimes "Mr. Snipes sent the I.R.S. a 600-page document in which he called himself a "nontaxpayer" and asked why the I.R.S. would not help him and others "in not complying with laws they clearly are not subject to." It goes onto say:
Mr. Snipes tried to get the trial moved to Manhattan, saying he could not get a fair trial because of a long history of Ku Klux Klan activity in central Florida, including a statue of a Klan leader a block from the courtroom.
Mr. Bernhoft argued Mr. Snipes should be acquitted because he does not live in Florida. But prosecutors presented the Florida driver's license of Mr. Snipes and a sworn statement, filed to get a homestead property tax break, in which Mr. Snipes declared his house in nearby Windermere, Fla., was his permanent residence.
One prosecutor, Scotland Morris, asked why, if Mr. Snipes sincerely believed he did not have to pay income taxes, he sent the government three phony financial instruments to pay $14 million in taxes. And he asked why the signature statement on a tax document was altered to say it was signed under "no" penalty of perjury.
He tried.

why such a long sentence? i understand he did not pay his taxes., and that is something "we have to do". however, making an example out of him with 3 yrs in prison., is insane!!! in the meantime., oj is out on the streets along with robert blake and whoever else got out of jail free card... the system seems to give the wrong punishments for the crimes commited in this country., it all depends on what judge you get, i would guess.... i feel bad for him that they he has to spend that long in jail. they could have gave him a choice to pay., and or a few months. this was not really a "vicious crime"!!! my god., have mercy!!!
