Artie Lange Quits Stern Show (Again), Cementing His Top Ranking On Celebrity Deathwatch
Posted by Mark Graham at 9:00 AM on April 11, 2008
While we haven't been avid listeners of Howard Stern since he made the switch to Sirius a few years back (call us crazy or even cheap, but we're morally opposed to paying for radio), we still follow the show pretty closely. And as anyone who has been paying attention knows, Stern sidekick Artie Lange has been on a self-destructive streak for the better part of the last nine or so months. His weight has been ballooning, his already prolific drug habit has only gotten worse and his on-air behaviour has become more erratic than ever before. However, things reached Defcon 6 levels on today's show when Artie flew into a rage, got into a physical confrontation with his personal assistant and abruptly (and from the sounds of it, tearily) resigned from the show. Audio of the incident follows after the jump.
It goes without saying that we are all very concerned for Artie's well-being at the moment. His recent appearances on Conan O'Brien and the Donny Deutsch Show were clear indications that all is not well in Artie's world, particularly on the substance abuse front. And with the show going on a scheduled weeklong hiatus, it's safe to say that the guys over at Artie Lange Deathwatch will be constantly monitoring Lange's behaviour for the next 10 or so days. Here's hoping that Artie is able to hold it together and refrain from going on the kind of bender that felled the likes of Belushi and Farley. We're pulling for you Artie.
Here's the audio of this morning's meltdown Sorry, the original audio we posted here was removed. But thanks to commenter cockfightbarmitzvah, you can now listen to the audio below in the comment section.

It also should be mentioned that Artie is supposedly off to take a week in Amsterdam. Just what the doctor ordered!

Wow..the one second audio clip really gives us a unique insight into the personal demons Artie has been clashing with. Or it's just muddled yelling. One of the two...

Artie has BIPOLAR DISORDER. If Howard really loves him, he will force him to start taking drugs for his illness, and cut off his obvious rage trigger: coke.

Glad I quite Howard 10 years ago. My life is much happier and angst free.

@bitfactory: I don't know if they're playing this as a cliffhanger because if it was the show would have been replayed at ad nauseum today instead of censoring themselves. I think Artie probably took the talking down he got from Stern about sleeping on air yesterday too hard and this incident just fueled the fire for him to leave.

I'm thinking bit. No doubt Teddy/Artie went to Amsterdam and they played this up to leave the show a bit early to catch a flight. They're off next week, so there's your cliffhanger.

@Paula Dixon: Ah, but people with bipolar disorder rarely, if ever, stay on their meds. They take the lithium for a while, improve a bit, and then think they don't need it anymore.
And nobody can make you start taking drugs.

Is Jackie Martling giving Artie career advice? Oh, wait...nevermind. I just realized I stopped caring a couple years ago.

Since about half the commentators are not current fans or Sirius subscribers, I feel the need to correct some "facts".
Artie is not currently using drugs:
Whether you believe it or not, Artie says he's clean. With no other evidence to the contrary, it is unfair not to take him at his word.
Artie takes large amounts of Subutex:
Subutex is used to control addiction and wean people off of heroin and other opiates. He has been using the drug to stay straight for the past few years. Side effects include weight gain, sleep problems and sweating (Wednesday's show), and extreme mood swings among others.
Artie is 5-10 years older than Belushi and Farley were when they died:
He resents the comparisons.
Amsterdam trip:
Although the show is on vacation next week, Artie has scheduled gigs (Tuesday?) that he will return early for. will be interesting to see if he makes the shows. By his account, he is only spending two days in Amsterdam as he felt that the temptations might be too much.
Cliffhanger:
Today's show was pulled from the rotation to allow time to help all parties cool down. Since the week's shows repeat all weekend, that's not a really good plan for a cliffhanger as no one will hear this show again.
Artie weighs 300 lbs:
Although not a model of fitness, it's also not an absolute death sentence.
Artie has a year-to-year contract:
Many fans hopes he exercises this and takes some time off to help himself get back on track.
Sirius:
The show is amazing on satellite. In addition to the obvious benefits (uncensored, limited commercials), the show has hit a natural stride that is almost addictive. The two channels related to the show are innovative in their personalities and programming.
There was a time where paying for water seemed silly. And then came Poland Spring.

@meechybee: Since I can only go on what I heard him say on the Conan clip, I guess I'll "take him at his word" that he's using coke. He seems to be crying out for help. So sad. :(

@meechybee:
Yeah, because drug addicts almost always tell the truth about whether they're still using, so I can totally see why you defend him on that point.
Seriously: benefit of the doubt is one thing, but only where experience tells us it should apply. My guess is that its application this case may be misguided.

@roeblingx: I can't argue that if you listen to radio all the time. I just listen in the car (and even then only when the iPod is not plugged in) and to me it's not worth it.
I was a longtime fan before the move, and remember Artie being a great addition to the show. If he really is gone, it's going to be a rough few weeks.

According to the Howard 100 News Team, Artie and his assistant Teddy (yes, that assistant) boarded a flight for Amsterdam this afternoon. This will not end well.
