First Review Of 'Step Brothers': Less Entertaining Than 'Two and a Half Men'
Posted by Mark Graham at 8:09 AM on March 1, 2008
The first review of Will Ferrell's new movie just came in and, wow, it's a doozy. No, we're not talking about Semi-Pro, which opens today; we're talking about Ferrell's next movie, Step Brothers, which was produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Adam McKay. The film, set to open in late July, screened in Los Angeles last night. A Defamer tipster was in the audience and passed an early review our way. Based on some of the pullquotes (if, indeed, you can call words lifted from an email tip "pullquotes"), this sounds like it's going to be closer to Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story than Talledega Nights in terms of both laughs and B.O. We hate to say it, but it's looking more and more like John C. Reilly is Box Office Poison when cast in anything other than a supporting role. Full review after the jump, but here's a few of the choice quotes: "The story makes no sense - repetitive, forced and predictable would be compliments" and "the dialogue is less entertaining and envelope-pushing than anything on Two and a Half Men." Ouch!

I was there too. It was really terrible. Apatow backlash will begin in July.

I'm so sick of posters that rip off 40-Year-Old Virgin. That poster was great the first time - and only time. Now it just seems unoriginal and kinda tiresome folks.
This does not look funny at all. Shame.

I think this tipster needs to be Defamer's Official Movie Reviewer.

Quit doing, I mean.
Why oh why can't I type? I lose more world-changing punchlines that way.

I think the obvious solution is for someone to phone Will and John's agents and tell them to quick doing the same goddamned movie over and over and over and over.

It sounds like Stuck On You v.2.0, minus the Siamese-twin fetish.

@Seanibus:
You need to use Firefox.
As I have short, fat fingers, I often hit two keys at once.
If you misspell something or use a word it doesn't know, it underlines it in red, just like Word. Then you can ignore it or add it to the dictionary.
Now lets start a pool as to when Will Ferrell ends up on a lame sitcom when his movie career implodes from all the shitty, lame, so-called comedies he's inflicted on the nation for the last few years!
Which net will stupidly pay him millions, because they can promote a TV show that stars an ACTUAL MOVIE STAR?
Even if almost all of his movies were monumental flops.

I tripped over my cat today. And I have a cousin named Bob who likes green socks. I've got a call into Apatow right now.

It's as though the failure of Stranger Than Fiction (which I liked) has scared Will into accepting every single comedic role he's offered.

In order to continue his very credible movie career, John C. Reilly's agent needs to take out a restraining order on Farrell. Those two need to be at least 500 feet apart at all times. This is the only way Reilly will get off the Farrell money teat and back to non-cartoonish acting.

Hard to fathom the notion that a gimmicky Will Farrell comedy is shitty...
Apatow and his little repertory company are kinda due a backlash, dontcha think?

Oh no! Who would of thunk it! Apatow wasn't funny to begin with! There's another 8 bucks safe in my wallet...

I am completely at a loss as to why Will Ferrell is a) considered funny and b) ... - nope, that's it.
Like some people, I've had occasion to contemplate continuing to be on this planet and one of those ocasions included a flight from LA to London (12 non-stop hours). I had a choice of watching 6 movies, 3 of which 'starred the talents' of Will Ferrell-'Kicking & Screaming', 'Bewitched', 'Melinda and Melinda'. All absolutely AWFUL.
Since then I have been persuaded by 'friends' to watch, 'Ron Burgandy' and 'Blades of Glory'. Each was really terrible based on the thinnest of concepts and barely any comedic content. I'm just about on speaking terms with those friends again.
Who gave Will Ferrell the idea he was funny? Is this all some sort of out of control intervention programme to boost his self-esteem that inexplicably has made lots of money and no-one knows how to stop?

i wish jim carey would make funny movies again, ashame really.
