Diablo Cody, The Gloria Steinem Of The Stripper Set?
Posted by Molly Friedman at 3:02 AM on March 1, 2008
As the bra-burning women's rights activists etched into our heads, being a feminist means having a choice: you can either choose to bake pies alongside June Cleaver, or you can choose to spray whip cream on your tits and shake your moneymaker in front of salivating men. But whichever path you choose to trek, you can always win an Oscar! Just like Diablo Cody (the artist formerly known as Brook Busey-Hunt, aka Candy Girl)! As you might expect, Diablo's triumph is proving to be an inspiration for aspiring pole dancers everywhere. As one stripper wrote on her blog, "I can't tell you how excited I am by [Cody] being shot out of the fame cannon and into the dazzling sky." Us too! But just in case Diablo's win wasn't enough to inspire these lacy ladies to put away their chaps for good, just wait til they read Cody's MySpace response to Tuesday's nudie pic revelations:
"I personally put my vag out there with pride, ladies and gents. And you bet your ass I'd do it again if the Beef Council would cough up the proper endorsement money."
The Beef Council? That's not funny, that's bogue. Fortunately, we think it's a safe bet to assume that the doddering old Hugh Hefner won't be coughing up any "endorsement money" for Diablo nude pix anytime soon, either. Judging by what we saw behind her Oscar dress's up-to-the-hip slit, on top of how conflicted we are about the "sexiness" of those MySpace pics, we're fairly certain that guys (or girls, for that matter) wouldn't exactly rush to the newsstands for a chance to see airbrushed pull-out spreads of our tattooed hero in the birthday suit we've already become quite familiar with.

"And you bet your ass I'd do it again if the Beef Council would cough up the proper endorsement money."
And here I thought Brooke was doing it all for ART
(though this hardly qualifies as the most creative use of Cool Whip).

@KLondike5: They're not even "sexual exploits," really -- it's not like she filmed an amateur porn tape, got photographed blowing some guy in the parking lot of Area, and then was knocked up by her skeevy manager.
And -- well, I've long ago run out of anything interesting to say about Ms. Cody. Thankfully, I'm aware of this fact.

I dunno, this might make me seem prudish, but I kind of think Diablo Cody is the feminist equivalent of "bad for the Jews."

"Beef Council" is funny.
Not the height of hilarity, but funny. What's with the schoolmarmish tone here? Are we upset that a woman who isn't Playboy bunny material is nonetheless notable for her sexual exploits? Are we upset that someone notable for their sexual exploits is also notable for something else? There's no story here.
Ohhhh...that's right...Diablo brings the page views.

I just think it's funny that everyone acts like they've never put revealing pics on the internet. Get with the times.

The Emperor isn't wearing any clothes, and this woman isn't attractive.
And she can't write her way out of a sack. "Home skillet," indeed. If you hire Page, Janney, Simmons, Cera, and Bateman (and a director who understands tone), even the most affected, twee script can work.

@Shumina: Overnight: so bad and yet so good. You might be onto something...
@Sweet Panda Love: I'm with you, prude Panda (though it doesn't really make you prudish, just balanced, me thinks).

@Sweet Panda Love: Damn straight. I will never, ever see anything feminist about women stripping or posing nude for money: what they're doing is catering to the male erection--in fact, their job depends on it--and that's not feminism; that's servitude.

@KLondike5: No. No it isn't. "Beef Council" is in no way, shape, or form funny. It's not even witty. It's mildly tepid vitriol directed at the very people that put her on the map when she was blogstripping.
She's admirably sticking to her guns about her past, and for that she's got my respect, but let's not fool ourselves here. She's not funny. I need to watch "Overnight." I've got a feeling here about her that somehow reminds me of that doc.

I've reached my personal saturation point with the Diablo hating and am now going to defect to her camp just for the sheer fuck of it. If we really think about it, the fact that her mediocre talent and plain looks have carried her this far in life bodes well for the 99% of us who are also average looking and marginally talented. So to hell with it. May her hype swell to Tokyo-destroying proportions. If we start it on a diet of Seacrests and Kardashians now, we can have it up to devouring Paris and Britney by the time Jennifer's Body wins Best Picture.

Quick fact check, douchetards: I quit stripping over a decade ago. But thanks for attempting to swipe me for having the audacity to support and be happy for the success of a writer who wasn't farted out of UCLA or Harvard with a chip on their shoulder and a collection of latte-stained ringer tees.
Has it really come down to dissecting Cody for how she looks? And that she's a shallow hack? So, she's not hot enough, or talented enough? Unlike you, with your Angelina Jolie looks, Leonard Cohen depth, and Haruki Murakami writing chops, right?
What, did character in the movie who was the loser, didn't-make-it-as-an-alt.rocker jingle-writer hit too close to home? Sorry. Guess it sucks to be you.
As for whether or not sex work is feminist--it isn't. And she isn't advancing the idea that it is. But a feminist can be, or have been, a sex worker, just as she can be a mom, a screenwriter, a fire fighter, a soldier, or a model.
Feminists can also say Suck It. So, I shall.
PS: If you're so f-ing sick of her, why post about her? Seems like you've contracted Gawker's Julia Allison Syndrome.

Oh. Ow. You have cut to the quick of me.
Sorry I'm not climbing onto the bitch bus to claim a seat beside you there, kid. Enjoy the ride. Can't wait to see where it ends. Presumably not at a podium holding a lil' gold man, name begins with "O."

@D.B. Cooper-Nichol: Congratulations, you're totally in line with 99.9% of the posts and comments about Ms. Cody in the past few weeks. And choosing to single out the "home skillet" line for derision, well that just demonstrates the kind of unique genius that's going to take you straight to the top.

@LilyBonesBurana: @Molly Friedman: I have no desire to "cut" anyone, tell anyone to "suck it", make psychic predictions about the limited success of anyone's career, or ride a bitch vehicle of any kind. I was merely pointing out that the aggression of the post (which seemed to come from nowhere) suggested … a profound lack of contentment.
As for Diablo Cody, I'm glad to see that she can own her stripping and various nude photos, as opposed to say, being stoned for them. I do see that as a byproduct of feminism (even if it may not have been the founding mothers' intent). Do I think she deserved an Oscar? Well, no, but I've accepted Kevin Costner's wins, so hers is no great hurdle.

@hypebreaker: Most of Juno's fans are sixteen-year-old girls, so why shouldn't they tell you to suck it?
The Diablo jokes are getting boring. Is she really so detestable? You would think Heidi Montag just won an Oscar.
In conclusion, suck it.

@LilyBonesBurana: Sorry, but Oscar doesn't always get it right (Crash, anyone?) and while Brook/Diablo has shown some modest talent to go with her sickeningly saccharin sense of irony, Juno is no exception.
I think it's rather telling of Miz Busey's demographic that her loyal fans can only come up with one retort to defend their precious goddess, the eternally bratty and dull-witted "Suck It".

@LilyBonesBurana: Well! A couple of things. We certainly didn't "swipe" you for supporting Diablo; in fact, if you read the post more carefully, we're actually in agreement with you ("Us too!"), and celebrating the fact that Diablo has come this far. Plus, we're not putting down strippers; in fact, we're saying strippers can be feminists too, as long as it's their choice to do so.
Sure, we made a few swipes at D for not exactly being Playboy material, but at the end of the day, isn't that an effing great thing not to be? Just sayin'.

Diablo Cody has put herself out and therefore is fair game, regardless of whether or not she has a vagina. You can't shut the barn door, people, particularly if you opened it and let everyone in. She exploited her past, yet now it's "unfair" or "mean" or "sexist" to bring it up (or mock it) because she's a woman? Just be careful what you wish for but don't expect everyone to like you when you get it.

Wow, so much contention over Diablo!
I'm glad she won -- go strippers! -- if unsure that she totally deserved it. As has been pointed out, Oscar gets it wrong plenty. (Crash might have been cutting-edge in 1980, but as for being better than its competition... *snort*.)
As for DC, she's Flavor of the Month right now but time will tell if she gets work over the long-term. That's a small club, and it's virtually ALL MEN. Hollywood is notoriously ageist too, so good luck to her, and any other woman that cracks the system.
