Will Ferrell Hopes You Drink Enough Bud Light To Make His 'Semi-Pro' Character Seem Fresh
Posted by Seth at 4:12 AM on February 5, 2008
If one 30-second Super Bowl spot fetched $2.7 million, as we've been told approximately 2.7 million times going into this year's festivities, then our cursory calculations put the cost of this Bud Light/Semi-Pro crossover ad at somewhere around the $7.1 million mark.
In exchange for that mindblowing sum (enough to pay for 11 Junos at least!), the "perfect beer for blowin' out the pipes" got one minute, 19 seconds of Will Ferrell delivering improvised non-sequiturs in the guise of the outlandishly bewigged*, male-chauvinist sportsman persona that's defined much of his extremely successful movie career. That Ferrell can't even be bothered anymore to change his posture, vocal inflection, or basic personality from role to role might strike some as the serious side effects of a creative rut. We, on the other hand, fail to see why one needs to fix what isn't broken--and with that pasty beer gut poking out, and that familiar, husky baritone in seemingly perfect pitch, well, friends, nothing appears broken. Now excuse us while we return to our fridge for a cold, refreshing Bud Light. Bud Light: I'm horny.™ This message brought to you by New Line Cinema and Anheuser-Busch, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Companies International. Drink responsibly.
*And in some cases, naturally becoiffed.

Note the Miami Dolphin colors...per chance a controversy in the making? The Pats were about to tie the perfect record of said "Fish" but lo and behold came the Giants.
Could this be the "Will Ferrell Curse"?

@CrankYank: For as long as there are rolling cameras pointed at him.
@VeeKaChu: Seconded!
Anybody want to bet that this character is the same one as he did in the racecar movie and the skating movie?

What struck me most about that spot when I saw it yesterday is that it may be the first-ever advertisement for an alcoholic beverage that specifically mentions alcohol.

How many times can he do this "I'll screw up every take" bit? Geez.
@Kdoggy: No curse - I think the offensive line was hung over or had some bad fajitas. From the one place on earth that's sad about last night's outcome - Greetings!

@Rilo-Andy: Don't worry, when the next in Will's seemingly endless parade of "sports comedies" tanks he'll likely announce "Darlington Days: Ricky Bobby Takes a Victory Lap" or maybe do one about curling.

Talladega Nights was the only one of his "character comedies" that I actually liked... Maybe it's cause one meets so many of those NASCAR types down here in the South. Also John C. Reilly saves any movie.

I think Will Ferrell could gain some credibility back if he stopped doing these poorly conceived character comedies. He hasn't made me laugh since Wedding Crashers.

They should have hired Pearl to do the commercial, you know, 'get her drink on.' Okay, maybe she's underage, but it still would have been funny. And cute. Say what you will but the commercial as shown was NOT cute. At all.

@hack-a-rific: I'm there with you. This shit is still funny to me. Granted, I've only seen Anchorman and Talladega Nights, not any of the others.
However, I'm sure that in ten years I'll regret liking this, just like I regret seeing Pauly Shore movies in the theater. Multiple times. And spending a summer talking like him. Oh, god, here comes the night terrors...

This is not the ad that aired. This must be the extended unfunny version.
