Would You Like To Look At Some Photos Of Child Stars?

4:56PM Jess McGuire | Why wouldn’t you? It’s Friday, the day God intended for office workers to slack off and faff about on the internet until it’s beer o’clock, and I feel it my duty to give you the heads up on something which should wile away a couple of minutes quite nicely. Our sister site Babblebaby has compiled a collection of photographs of famous child stars both from Australia and overseas, and it’s highly enjoyable browsing indeed. Remember when they were at their sweetest! Gasp and marvel at what they look like now! Highlights for me included Matthew Krok (remember Arthur from Hey Dad!/the toilet paper kid?), Nikki Webster (purely for the picture used to show what she looks like now), Jonathan Lipnick (Jerry Maguire child!), and motherchucking Webster! Also: Stephanie from Full House? They some mad cans you gots there, lady! MORE: Child Stars – Where Are They Now? Part One Child Stars – Where Are They Now? Part Two More »

Koby Abberton Is Going To Jail!

3:08PM Jess McGuire | Bra Boy Koby Abberton has just been sentenced to some HARD TIME after assaulting an off-duty policeman in Honolulu. His odds of escaping painful prison shower pursuits seem pretty good though, as he’s only copped a three day sentence. The 30-year-old pleaded no contest today to the misdemeanor assault charge and was given a three-day sentence. Abberton was handcuffed after appearing in Hawaii’s Kaneohe District Court and escorted to Oahu Community Correctional Centre to serve his term. Prosecutors had sought a six-month sentence but District Judge Ray Graulty said Abberton had taken responsibility for his actions. Koby took responsibility for his actions? Good boy! You go, Glen Coco! Three days for you, Glen Coco! More »

Cate Blanchett On The Joys Of Spooning

12:58PM Jess McGuire | I adore Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. I think they seem like a delightful and interesting pair, and I occasionally dream of hosting dinner parties where they attend and everyone gets sweetly shickered and enjoys some intellectual (but joke filled) banter over a couple of bottles of red. But that dream is between me and the security guards at the Sydney Theatre Company, ho ho! Cate has spoken to Oprah and revealed just why she and her husband Andrew Upton fit together so well. It’s because, well… they fit together so well! Cate Blanchett has revealed private details of what she looks for in a perfect bedroom mate, in a candid chat with Oprah Winfrey More »

Nicole Kidman A Terrible Actress? Say It Ain’t So, The Times!

12:08PM Jess McGuire | Baz Luhrmann’s Latest Epic TM Australia has finally premiered, and the reviews are trickling in! Claire Sutherland from the Herald Sun loved it, calling it “a love letter to the Australian landscape and our history” and adding that “Australia has international blockbuster written all over it.” Meanwhile, over at The Age, Jim Schembri was somewhat less impressed, calling the film good but excessively lengthy and full of “Aussie cliches”. Both reviewers seemed happy enough with the performance of leading lady Nicole Kidman though. But a reviewer for The Times over in the UK has positively slammed Our Nic! Baz Luhrmann’s choice of Nicole Kidman to star in his latest epic movie Australia has been savaged by a British newspaper columnist. More »

Billionaire Has Some Cheery Thoughts On The Homeless

11:18AM Jess McGuire | Just in time for the festive season, billionaire businessman Gerry Harvey (of Harvey Norman fame) has spoken out against those pesky poor people who don’t have the decency to live in proper houses. They go by the name The Homeless but if you’re inspired enough by Gerry’s words, you may like to start referring to them “Gutter Fleas”. Retailing billionaire Gerry Harvey has lamented that Australian charity is being wasted on “no-hopers”. Asked in a new book about his community role, Mr Harvey said giving to people who “are not putting anything back into the community” is like “helping a whole heap of no-hopers to survive for no good reason”. HAHAHA that’s right, Gerry! What are they giving back to the community? Nothing! Because they can’t afford it! Lazy buggers. Let’s stop helping them survive and then maybe, finally, we can end poverty. By killing it! GENIUS. MORE: Retail king slams ‘no-hoper’ charity More »

2008 Weblog Awards

10:16AM Jess McGuire | Dearly beloved, Depending on how closely you follow the competitive world of blogging (it’s as gripping as a successful raid whilst playing World Of Warcraft!) you may or may not be aware that there’s something called the Weblog Awards and nominations are currently open for 2008. Among the many categories is Best Australian Or New Zealand Blog. I am telling you this not just because I want you to vote for Defamer Australia – although you’re more than welcome to – nor so you nominate our fantastic sibling sites like Gizmodo AU, Babblybaby, or Kotaku AU. I am making you aware of these awards so you can nominate Sam De Brito’s All Men Are Liars repeatedly, over and over, like some sort of idiot mantra recited in the comments section of a website. OH WAIT! THAT’S ALREADY BEEN DONE – LIKE, 180 TIMES! He has devoted readers, and good for him. But what of female Sam? Where is her flood of nominations? If it wasn’t for Sam In The City Ask Sam, I’d be clueless as to when I should meet his parents, how soon is too soon to text after the third date, etc. So go and nominate Girl Sam, or Defamer Australia, or anyone really. Sam de Brito is clearly the best blogger in the country with a thoroughly passionate fanbase, but it can’t hurt to widen the field a bit, eh? x MORE: 2008 Weblog Awards More »

Roger Ebert Likens Himself to Non-Schumacher Phantom of the Opera

8:38AM Kyle Buchanan | Since Roger Ebert’s return to writing after the 2006 thyroid surgery that left him without part of his jawbone, he’s been a notably more adventurous scribe, unafraid to toss off deadpan satire, rice cooker meditations, and a good Ben Lyons slam now and then. Now, though, after a thoughtful essay on the internal, decay-obsessed Synecdoche, New York, Ebert has been moved to write one of his most personal stories yet: a digressive, Charlie Kaufman-esque meditation on life, death, and his new, Phantom-like face. Death Comes To ABC: ‘Daisies,’ ‘Money,’ ‘Stone’ Meet Their Makers

8:30AM Seth | Breaking news, as THR is reporting that ABC “has decided against picking up” struggling series—in decreasing order of belovedness—Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, and Eli Stone. By not actually saying the word “canceled,” the network leaves the door open to ordering future episodes, but THR puts the odds of that at “improbable.” More »
